I never wanted to transfer to Hogwarts. Ilvermorny, the American wizarding school, is my home. My mom told me to adapt, but I can't do that half across the world.
But of course I didn't want to transfer. I was in my third year, at the best wizarding school in the world, top of my classes in all subjects, yet I had to. If my dad hadn't had a twin brother, none of this would've happened. My dad's innocent, I just can't prove it. My dad had to leave the American prison and move to Azkaban because of his "Savage, desperate attempts to escape." It's not his fault that he's innocent...
"Lauren, stop daydreaming and pay attention to what I'm saying!" said Professor Mcgonagall. She had been trying to explain the Sorting Ceremony to me, but I wasn't ready for that. Summer wasn't over and school hadn't started yet. We were the only two people at Hogwarts, but I had to be sorted into a house before the school year. It was either that or be sorted along with the first years, but I'd rather not be exposed to any more embarrassment.
"As I was saying," Professor Mcgonagall continued. "You will be sorted into either: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. I reckon you'll get into--"
"Professor McGonagall, I'd rather the surprise stay a surprise until the ceremony," I said. But I knew already, I was in Horned Serpent back in Ilvermorny, for the scholars.
"Okay, very well," she responded. "But shall we go?"
I nod and she leads me to the Great Hall. "Sit here," she said. I do as she said. "Now, I'll place this hat onto your head to determine what house you will be in," she says. She gently places the hat onto my head. I was not nervous at all.
It only sit on my head a second, then started talking. I'll be honest, that alarmed me.
"Huh!" it yelled. "An American. Ilvermorny transfer. Used to be in... Horned Serpent." How a hat could tell me all this just from being on my head, I didn't understand. "Lauren Athens. Well... Maybe Griffindor. Brave, aren't you? Faught many brave battles in America," he continued. McGonagall looked excited. "But... I choose... Ravenclaw!" McGonagall's smile faded. I could've sworn she muttered "Darn" under her breath.
A week later, I got to Hogwarts with the rest of the fifth years. On the Hogwarts Express, I met this girl named Hazel who was also in Ravenclaw. She said she would help me get used to Hogwarts if I taught her some more advanced things I learned in Ilvermorny. I agreed with her. I really needed to learn about this place. It was the perfect way to learn more about the school!
"Now, this is Ravenclaw Tower," she'd said the Saturday before classes started. "Our common room and dormitories are up here."
"So we just come here between classes?" I asked her.
"Yep. Or you could to to the library or something," she responded. "But the teachers don't like us being in the halls during breaks, but we're allowed to be in them just between regular classes, of course."
"Got it."
"And have your parents signed a form that allows you to go to Hogsmeade?" she asked me.
"Yep."
"Great! Tomorrow, we can go to Hogsmeade, then. We can go shopping for some fun things and extra books, just in case."
"Okay!" Nothing got me more excited than new books. Not being sarcastic here.
