After leaving the momentary calm called the toilets, Jac scanned the room to see Fletch sitting at a table and made a beeline in his direction. As she approached she noticed that the two women who he had been stood with earlier that morning were also sat at the table, still trying to gain his attention.
"Hey you." He greeted her as she sat down in the chair beside him.
"Oh is she your girlfriend?" One of the Barbie-type girls asked, looking Jac up and down.
"Yes." Fletch jumped in before Jac could deny it, realising that this could be his escape route from their relentless unsuccessful flirting. He wrapped an arm around the surgeons waist as her cheeks flushed crimson. " 'She' is-"
"Veronica." Jac interjected and heard Fletch stifle a snort with a cough. She smirked as the girl's faces dropped in disappointment.
"Wanna go get a drink sweetheart?" He asked pointedly, trying to send her psychic messages to get her to say yes.
"Sounds great darling." The woman stood up and took his hand. They reached the bar and Fletch dropped her hand, the absence of the momentary warmth leaving a cold sensation in her palm.
"What do you want?" He asked, referring to the drinks.
"Water please." She replied.
"Water? You're not pregnant are you Naylor?" He joked after placing the order with the barman.
"Would be a bit of a miracle if I was." She replied as she picked up her glass and took it across to a table for two in the corner. "Come on Fletcher, you're a Nurse you should know this stuff. I can't drink on these meds."
"Ah yeah sorry." He slid into the seat next to her. "So come on then be honest, how are you feeling these days?"
The surgeon paused and inhaled sharply. "There's still a bit of pain, mainly at night time when it gets colder. But generally, I'm feeling a lot better. Madani's been doing my nut in but I like a challenge."
"Well that's good to hear." The Nurse replied with a genuine smile. She smiled back, the rare sparkle in her eye which made his heart flutter at the sight.
"What about you? You know...after everything that's been going on." She asked gingerly.
"Getting there slowly. You being on the edge of death, hasn't helped much." He gave a small nervous laugh.
"Well I'm becoming a bit of a pro now." She muttered as they fell into a comfortable silence.
"So girlfriend eh?" She teased.
"Yeah they uh they wouldn't leave me alone. So I thought I'd take advantage of me and you. You know escape while I can." Fletch replied sheepishly.
"I mean the looks on their faces were worth it." She said with a proud smirk.
"Yeah well look at you. Probably couldn't believe that someone like me could get someone like you." He complimented her.
"Pft says the one who was getting girls falling at his feet."
"Yeah well not decent ones like my girlfriend here:" He watched as she blushed slightly under the dull lighting of the bar room.
