Chapter One
A Day in the Life of Jade
I groaned as I fell back onto my bed, exhausted from work. Today felt like it had gone on for years, though of course, it didn't. All I wanted to do was sleep for twenty-four full hours, to make up for the hours I was not able to sleep through. Work and school were slowly draining me from my energy and replacing it with stress and exhaustion. I laid there for another minute before getting up to make something to eat.
I walked down the hall and turned into the kitchen then made my way to the fridge. After moving some things around I found cheese slices and immediately thought of a grilled cheese sandwich. I grabbed a pan and the loaf of bread and proceeded to make my dinner. As I let the first side cook, I walked back to my room and changed into a pair of black legging and a pastel yellow t-shirt, which was two sizes too big for my small but curvy frame.
Jogging back to the kitchen, I worried about my sandwich. I flipped the sandwich and sighed in relief, as it was perfectly golden. Once it was finished I put it on a plate and brought it up to my room. I grabbed my books for my classes along with my notebook and a pen and put on a playlist of music for background noise. I had a couple of hours before I had to get ready for classes, so I thought it would be best to study for one hour and sleep for the last hour. I usually sleep after my classes, and wake up at 6:00 pm to get ready for work, then have a nap when I get home before I have to get ready for my University classes.
My schedule is usually busy, but I enjoy it. I get anxious about not doing something during the day. I work long shifts on weekends than on weekdays just to keep me occupied. Not many people get to say they enjoy what they do for a career, but I certainly do. I'm surrounded by some great people and have made many friends through my job, not just coworkers but customers as well. Though the best part about my job is that we have live performances from bands nearly every night. Which means that I get to meet the members and talk with them, as well as serve them.
I took large bites from my sandwich as I read from the textbook. I would occasionally rub the grease from my fingers onto my leggings before grabbing the pen and writing something into my notebook.
I did not realize that I had fallen asleep until my alarm woke me up. I got up and stretched my body as I let out a long, deep yawn. I trudged down the hallway and into my bathroom and started my daily morning routine which consisted of showering, brushing my teeth, and putting my hair into a messy bun on the top of my head, then getting dressed. I never wore makeup to school, as I did not think it mattered, though I did wear makeup to work.
"Jade, can you come here please?" I heard my mother call. Before I went to see what she needed I grabbed my hoodie and my purse. I quickly walked towards the kitchen, as the strong smell of coffee hit me.
"Good morning, Mom," I said to her and kissed her cheek.
"Morning, Darling. How did you sleep?" She asks while keeping her eyes glued to this morning's paper.
"Fine. You called for me?" I questioned her, getting right to the point.
"Oh, yes. Katherine called last night and said she had bought your father and me two tickets to New York to see her. We are leaving Thursday and will be back next Wednesday." She told me.
"Oh," I mumbled. It was no surprise that my dearest sister had not bought me a ticket to come to see her. We did not really get along, as we are two completely different people. I quickly said goodbye to my mother and walked out to my car. Before I pulled out of the driveway I plugged an AUX cord that was connected to the stereo into my phone and turned on one of my favourite bands.
