"Joanna, don't be scared. I'm. sure they are going to love you just as much as I do." Jo's mom reassures her with a squeeze of her small hand. They stand outside, in front of a large house that could be considered a mansion. The wood work on the outside is beautifully crafted, the windows large enough to be considered a doorway, and the door it's self is enough to cost a fortune. Something that Jo didn't have. And that scared her the most. She has watched all these movies and in every single on of them, the rich people are always the villain.
The two walk to the door hand in hand, with a large suitcase with both of their clothes tucked inside. Jo's mother lets go of her hand to knock on the door but takes it back soon after. There is some ruckes inside, girls screaming, running around. The door flings open suddenly, revealing an older looking women. Maybe in her early 70's. Her hair is white and falls to just below her jaw. Skinny glasses frame her face helping her to see. She takes one look at Jo's mother and hugs her. Behind her two young girls, around the age of Jo, looks out from the corridor. Both of them have bright ginger hair. One of them smile at Jo but the other looks at her with disgust. The smiling girl comes over, tugging on her grandmothers pants.
"Can we go play Granma?" The little girl asks with her sweet smile. He words are in French, but thankfully Jo has learned French. The grandmother looks down at her with a just as sweet smile. She then looks to Jo and her smile falters. The once sweet look vanishes and twists into a dreaded, disappointed look.
"Alright, Aimée. But not in the house this girl is filthy." The grandmother had not intended Jo to understand French. But Jo didn't know what she had meant about her being dirty. She is perfectly clean, in fact she took a shower just before getting on the plane over here. She has made an effort to keep clean and presentable for meeting her family. Aimée didn't know what she meant either. Jo looked perfectly fine to her. But the less she obeyed her grandmothers orders and took Jo to the back yard. On the way, she heard her mother and the grandmother argue.
"I told you not to bring her. But you deliberately defied me." The grandmother almost spat.
"What was I going to do, leave her home alone? She is my daughter and your granddaughter."
"She is not my blood nor yours. She is a burden to us all."

The first time I met this women rings through my head like a never ending storm. The words she spat vibrates in my ears like the silence at home after a loud party. But I am surprised at how different they all look. Thérèse looks much older. Now instead of walking with her head held high, she walks hunched over carrying a cane. Pauline, like her mother, looks much older. Wrinkles have formed on her skin and her hair is almost straight. Maybe she stopped with the whole curly Tyler Swift hair. Victoire hasn't changed a bit. Only her hair is a bit straighter and shorter. Aimée has grown a lot over the years. She is even taller than her Aunt Victoire who is 5' 8". And she is absolutely gorgeous. Sylvie has also grow to be gorgeous. But she is the only one that has giant hair now. And it's not that big. She is about an inch shorter than Aimée but non the less tall.
I can't help but feel all my nerves unravel from being in the presence of such beautiful women who are taller and by far more confident. They look as if they are on the runway, not coming in town for a funeral of a dead relative. And this fact makes me feel even smaller than before.
They don't seem so sad, does that mean I'm over reacting? But then I remember that they haven't had any contact with her for years; since we visited them when I was 12. That's about eight years of no contact. Enough time for someone to forget and move on even if it's their daughter, sister, or Aunt. But I'm more or less fortunate.
