Crack!
Lightning ripped through the dark, endless fabric of sky. Each new reckless bolt falling closer and closer towards my warm, quaint cottage. As my fingers sifted and smushed through bundles of wet grass blanketing the inside of my garden and wet mud dripped off my wet cheeks I began to think that maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. A cold rush whipped my hair around, long grass and lily petals thrashed my face. Note to self: Lily petals DO NOT taste as good as they look."Here kitty kitty... I need you to come here okay?.."
I could spot two slitted and wary and bright eyes peeking through flower stem after flower stem. Curiously the eyes inched forward and I could begin to make out a slim feline face. Even though it was dark out I could see it's beautifully chiseled angular features. As new bolts fell, the abrupt light they cast lit up crooks and notches on the powerful cats face. Orna. A rare breed even these parts. Something special about him brought of me out of the comforts of my cozy abode and into the grueling and cold chill of this nights storm. It was far too stormy for anyone to be out here, even a feline with as much power as an Orna.
"Yesssss"
I hissed lowly to myself and crushed wet grass in my hand to stop my body from wiggling into a victory dance. The giant cat's white face was illuminated as a new bolt crashed nearby. She cocked her head at me, sniffing the air and inching forward."Thank god.. Okay, thats it, thats it, come here. Right here, right on over." -
I soothed smiling like a hopeless maniac and patting the ground in encouragement. My palmful of food stretched and ached desperately towards the taut cat who only stood there watching me contort my body into god knows what."For Christ's sake, come here and take my food. I've got plenty of chicken, crawdads... elixirs and fire to keep you cozy!"
I waggled my eyebrows proudly at the cat who still wouldn't budge at my glorious and clearly fantastic offer.
"Tuna?"
Without so much as sound the ungrateful feline turned around and bolted.
"ARGHHH!" I crushed palmfuls of wet grass in my hands, bracing my body against the cold ground. Wet strands of hair curtained my face and the harsh defeat of the day melted the rigidity of muscles as tight as sailor knots into a pile of mush.
All that was left as I peered up at the stars with bright eyes was a tired body and soul lying still in the ocean that was now my backyard.I should be scared being out here, anyone would be. It's dark, freezing, trees sway as violently as hysteric madmen, and I'm terrified in fact, but something deep within tells me I'm supposed to be out here. Somethings different about this night's storm and I want to know what it is. And lucky for me... well I'm not just anyone.
CRACK, in an instant a blinding flash of light violently shook the tired ache from my bones and replaced it with a loud ringing in my ears. My vision blurred and hearing was nearly gone but my body was invigorated with the deep set knowledge that I, Naomi Korynth, was having a brush with death in my own backyard.
Holding tight to the mauled remnants of energy I had left within me, I scrambled across the slippery cobbles as best I could, tumbling over mismatched stones along the way. I shot myself through the sliding wooden doors and slammed them shut, my heart rattling against my ribcage, just as loudly as the shambly, shakey doors that had just slammed. A searing pressure formed behind my eyes and a groan pushed its way from my throat as I crashed into the fluffy, dry ground below me."Meow!"
Barkley padded gingerly across the carpet and to my side where I lay down on my back, chest heaving.
"What are you lookin at?... " I rubbed my temples.
"Mrowwww.."
"Its never gotten that close before Barkley, something feels different about the storm tonight, like something's in the air," I managed to choke out, "Just can't quite tell if that something is good.. or bad."
I rasped every word softly, my voice sounding like the crackling fireplace four steps from me and the heat in my lungs cooled and slowed gently with every deep breath.
"Mrow?"
"Yeah, yeah I know I think too much."
I chuckled lightly and shook the water from my short auburn hair like a wet dog, then smoothed it out of my face with a lean arm. You had to keep your strength and wits about you when you lived where I lived.
Crackle boom!
With what little hearing I had left, I knew the rain was crashing harder yet against the roof. I picked myself up and hobbled over to my hot tea, wrapping a blanket around me, gripping the warm mug like my life depended on it and I swore it did. Louder and louder the rain fell. Harder and faster it crashed down, sending vibration through my body. Another crack of thunder and my mug crashed onto the floor.
'What in the hell is happening out there?'
Suddenly a knock boomed above the deafening chaos of storm outside and awoke me from my daze. Nobody ever knocks. Babump babump. Not ever. The knocking became wilder and more desperate and I rushed towards the peephole bravely despite my shaking hands. No way. A swirl of black hair. A flicker of knowing brown eyes. Blood stained hands. I opened the door, a rush of adrenaline pumping through me. One word.
"Help."
