Numbers are my life, I owe numbers and logic my success and everything it entailed. Yes, I was that girl who did calculus for fun, well I guess I still do. I really don't get what is so appealing about reading a lengthy play that makes no sense and doesn't really solve any problems or get much of anything done while also being purely opinion based. Also another one of my shortcomings was never being on time. At the moment I'm pacing to my old university to give a quick talk and I was already 7 minutes late... I see the familiar pillars and I sigh in relief. I turn on W 144th street and open to an all too familiar building. The room was 42 I think... yes. As I open the lecture room all eyes turn to me. I walk to podium and it looks like every seat was filled. I smile and begin the "talk".
"Well good morning everyone. I want everyone to get up. Come on, stand." They seemed confused but then a girl in the back stood and soon everyone follow.
"Okay now I want you to stretch and relax. Let go of all that tension. Once you think you've done that you may take a seat and we can begin." After a couple of awkward seconds some began to understand what I was saying. When everyone took their seats I began again.
"I want all of you to give yourselves a round of applause. You are at Columbia, one of the most prestigious universities in the country and in my opinion it's the best but I'm defiantly biased. This university will give you everything you need and more but to succeed in anything you need to posses one simple trait, passion. With the education you are receiving and this one simple trait even the sky isn't the limit. Love what you do and do what you love. That right there is the key to success. That's how I was able to become the leading analyst at NYSE. You start somewhere. I'm my case, the mock stock market at 14. You can never start pursuing your passions too early. Starting to early can never hurt. So chase that internship and fight for it like your life depends on it, take chances, and don't ever take no for an answer. If you stay true to yourself and work hard there is nothing you can't do. Alright, I think that's enough preaching for today. Does anyone have any questions?" I glanced around the room finally spotting I hand, the girl who was the first to stand.
"Yes, you in the farther left corner, introduce yourself and ask away." I said.
"Hi, my name is Audre. I was wondering, how did you become the youngest person to invest with the most gross income in the world?"
"Well Audre, first things first I found out my dad's Etrade account password. Then comes the more complex stuff. First I would just sit and watch as the numbers went up and down. Then I started looking into different companies and what they were doing to fluctuate the numbers. Once you realize how the two correlate you have got the basic understanding of how the stock market works. You also need to invest with an understanding of how a consumer would perceive things. If you think something is completely out of this world chances are so does everyone else. Lastly, you need a little luck." I finished answering a few other questions before receiving a warming round of applause. I walked out, and reach the street before hearing my stomach rumble. Lunch, I need to feed myself. I take out my phone from my pocket and dial my best friend, Amelia. We met when I moved in to her development during kindergarden. We ended up going to college together and did our masters in neighboring buildings. She now was working as a professor at NYU while also doing research on the chemistry involved in releasing neurotransmitters.
"CHARLOTTE! I haven't spoken to you in ages!" she screeched.
"We live together you dumb ass." I replied.
"Yes but 5 hours is a long time!" she said.
"Yea, if your a fly."
"Okay so why are you calling and disturbing my ground-breaking research?"
"Wanna meet at Symposium in 10?" I asked.
"Hells yea bitch! See you there!"
I hung up and started scrolling through my messages, 3 from Dylan this morning... how lovely. We hooked-up twice after some cocktail parties where I lost my wits. I would never be stupid enough to sleep with him sober. Though it was physically enjoyable it lacked something that couldn't be manifested.
I continued walking through the blocks before finally opening the door to the place I spent a quarter of my allowance on during undergrade, Symposium. It's the best Greek food outside of Greece. I find it ironic that I'm half Greek and its an economic ruin.
"Charlotte! It's been too long! I was starting to think my favorite customer left me for good." called out Alexander.
"Oh I wouldn't dream of it." I said giggling. Yes, I giggle occasionally.
"So is Amelia coming around today?" he questions.
"Oh of course, can we have the usual table?" I ask.
"Yes of course follow me." he said weaving through the tables. When I sat down Alexander gave me a stern look.
"What is it? You have that look on your face like you want to say something." I say.
"It's just... Why you don't bring a boy? You are very beautiful girl. But not so young..."
"Alexander! I'm only 25!" I say between laughs. Over the years he has become like an uncle to me and he worries like one too.
"Time flies, remember that." he says and then turns and leaves. Yea I tried the whole falling in love crap. Lets just say it was a major "crash".
"CHAROLLLLEETTTE!" I hear from behind me. That must be the one and only Amelia.
"Calm down, we just had coffee this morning." I laugh.
"Whatever you Debbie downer! Guess what?" she says as she's sitting down. I raise an eyebrow and she continues, "the Setai Club is having an event tonight! That means me and a certain gal in close proximity to me will be dressed in very classy yet provocative clothing and getting it on with some lovely specimen of men." she says winking. I think about it for a second, I do pay extensive fees to be a part of this club that apparently you had to be in if you worked at the stock exchange. To be a big name on Wall Street you have to be in this club.
"Okay fine, why not?" I say. I'm not sure if I will regret it the next morning but I guess I'll find out.
