Chapter 27

Valerie’s P.O.V.

“Valerie, we need to talk.”

“I know.” I tell my mom quietly, throwing my backpack on the ground. I take a seat at the kitchen table with her and sigh. “What’s up?”

“I want to know what’s going on with you. I’m worried.”

“You shouldn’t be. Look, I just wanna apologize for being so rude the other day but I really didn’t like the fact that you attacked Ashton like that. It was my fault, not his.”

“Valerie-”

“Okay, fine. It was his fault too. You didn’t have to be so rude about it, though. But I’m really sorry for being so disrespectful about it, mom. I just, blew up. I’ve been having a rough time lately, but I’m good now, okay. I really hope you can accept my apology.” I tell her quietly.

“Why are you acting like this lately, Valerie? That boy is making you act weird and-”

“I’m in love, mom.” I tell her quietly with a small smile. “He’s not doing anything. It’s just this weird butterfly feeling when I’m around him, I don’t know. It’s stupid, but I really love him.”

“You love him?” She asks, leaning back in her chair, raising her eyebrows.

“Yeah, mom. A lot.”

She sighs. “You can’t let him change you.”

“I won’t, mom. I don’t have to change for him. He’s so wonderful, mom. He’s so wonderful.”

“You’re getting a spacey look in your eyes. You okay?”

“Yeah.” I tell her with a small smile. “I’m great.”

“You’re still grounded, you know.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“And you’re not allowed at his house. He has to come over here.”

“Mom.” I whine. “Winston’s at his house.”

“You finally got the dog, huh?”

“Yeah, mom. But our apartment can’t have dogs without paying an extra million dollars so Ashton was thoughtful enough to take care of Winston for me.”

She sighs. “You’re so grounded.”

“You’re really getting into this assignment.” I tell Ashton, looking at him with his nose buried in a poetry book.

“I just can’t see the words. They’re too small.” He complains.

“Do you need glasses?” I ask with a giggle.

“I have glasses.” He retorts with a frown.

“Where are they?”

“In my backpack.” He says quietly.

“Well put them on.” I tell him, setting my books down on the coffee table.

“I look like such a nerd when I put them on.” He complains.

“I bet you’d make a hot nerd.” I tell him, biting down on my bottom lip.

“Fine.” He whines.
