Chapter 28

Valerie's P.O.V.

"So, how are things with you and Ashton?" Luke asks with a smirk as he reaches over me to put a book on a shelf.

"They're going good." I tell him with a smile. "He's so amazing, Luke."

Luke laughs. "Well, I'm glad things worked out between you two. He was miserable without you."

"I'm glad things worked out, too." I tell him.

"You two can go now." The librarian calls over the counter. "Tomorrow's your last day, don't forget."

"How could I?" Luke asks with an eyeroll.

I swat at his arm and laugh. "So, what are you doing today?"

"Going over to Ashton's." Luke says. "Patty's making ribs tonight."

"The meal of men." I tell him with a giggle.

"Don't laugh, Hart. It's true. I'd invite you, but it seems like you're confined to your house."

"Unfortunately." I tell him with a frown. "Are Michael and Calum going?"

"Nope. They both have dates tonight."

"Really?" I ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Yep." Luke says with a sigh. "Looks like I'm gonna be the single one forever."

"Oh come on, Luke. Don't be one of those people."

"Sorry." He says with a laugh. "It's just annoying. Everyone's all happy and in love and I'm just wallowing in my self pity watching Netflix all night."

"Just wait, Luke. The right girl will come around." I tell him with a smile. "Anyways, I've gotta go home. I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Yeah, see you then, Hart."

I wave over my shoulder and get into my car. I turn it on and turn the radio up. I hum quietly as I pull out of my parking space. I drive to the nearest gas station and fill my car up with gas before heading back to the house. I park the car and walk up to the apartment. I throw my keys on the counter and walk into my room. I lay down for a minute before picking up my phone. I send my mom a text to let her know I'm home from school and let out a sigh.

I start on my homework and try to get it done as fast as possible. A couple of hours pass by and I hear my mom get home. I call out to greet her and she tells me she'll be in her room. Once I'm done with my homework, I head into the living room and sit on the couch. I flip on the television and watch for a little while.

My phone starts ringing and I see that it's Luke calling me. I furrow my eyebrows together before answering the call.

"Hello?"

"Valerie."

"What?" I ask with a smile.

"There's a problem."

"With what?" I ask, sitting up with a sigh.

"Ashton."

"What?" I ask immediately.

"He's been locked up in his room for like the past hour. I heard him crying and he won't come down and he's just crying and he won't stop and he won't open the door and I don't know what's going on and-"

"I'll be over in five minutes." I look at the clock and curse under my breath. How am I supposed to get out without my mom noticing? I walk over to her room and knock on the door. "Mom?"
