"Please"
"I love you. Please don't leave"
Chloe whispered with her shaky voice.
"You see, we were wrong about something else in the prophecy. My first love was never Eve. It was you Chloe. It has always been."
Lucifer takes a step forward and their faces were only a few millimetres apart now.
He could feel her warm breath just before he kissed her gently.
It felt like a million years to Chloe, but it didn't last as long as she'd wished it would.
She could've stayed on that balcony, with Lucifers hands on her cheeks and his lips on hers forever. She didn't want anything else, ever again.
"Please, don't go" she whispered one last time, before her voice cracked and the tears were streaming down her cheeks.
"Goodbye" Lucifer said with wet eyes. His wings appeared and after a brief second, he was gone.
The wind of him flying away made Chloe shiver. She stood there a little while, with her arms wrapped around herself, because now there is no one else to hold her like Lucifer once did. After a few minutes it finally hit her. The love of her life, the person she wanted to spend the rest of her days with was gone. And she didn't know for how long, or if he would ever come back and it scared her. It caused her to shake to her core, and suddenly her whole body was trembling and her feet went numb.
She slowly sat down on the ground, using the glass windows behind her to support her back so she wouldn't hurt herself when she lost all her strength.
How could she let it get this far? Why couldn't she just say no to the priest and trust Lucifer.
Why did she have to be the reason the demons came to earth?
'She was the reason he's gone' is what she keeps repeating in her head until she bursted into tears and trembled even more. She sat there for quite a while and thought about every kiss they shared, about every hug, about everytime she wouldn't believe him when he said he was the devil.
After a while she stood up again, which took her a few tries, because she was still weak.
She walked to the glass railing and looked over the whole city, wiping away her tears.
"Please, tell me he is going to be alright" she whimpers, starring into the dark night sky. It was a clear night, you could see the stars and oh how she wished Lucifer was here to see it.
Suddenly, a thousand dark clouds were pulling up and it started pouring like she had never seen it before. Normally, she'd ran inside by now, but all she could do was stare and reach out her hand to feel the rain on her hand. Once again, she tilted her head towards the sky, and in the very moment, a lighting followed by thunder stroke. The lighting was so bright, it lighted up the whole city and for a brief moment, you could see everything. The thunder was the most deafening thing she had ever heard, not even a hail of bullets was so loud.
There was no reason for her to believe that that hadn't just been a sign from God.
Her face was still tearstained, but she couldn't hold back a little grin.
She knew, he would be okay down there. Even if God was punishing him, he would not let anything happen to his own son. Would he?
Slowly, she retreated back inside and headed towards the elevator. Her steps were getting slower and as she was about to enter, she stopped and turned around. Chloe stood there for a while before she pulled out her phone and texted Dan.
"Hey Dan. I know this is kind of spontaneous, but could you please pick up Trixie at my house and let her stay with you for a few days? Im kind of going through something and I don't know when I'm gonna be able to go back to work. Thanks, Chloe." A tear managed to escape her eye as she swiped out of Dans chat and clicked on Lucifers.
"Hello again Detective"
"Long time no annoy"
"Send me a 👍"
"So I know you're alive"
"Any emoji will do"
She had to giggle as more tears streamed down her face again. He really cared about her. He wanted to know where she went, when she'd be back. Her smile faded as she remembered where she was going, and why.
"How could I" she asks herself with disgust for her own actions.
She took a deep breath and went up the stairs to Lucifers bed. The sheets are like they were never touched. Red silk, just like his endless robes in his closets. She stroke the bedsheets before heading to his closet. She took one of his robes, laid it down on the bed and undressed before she put on the robe. After that, she put her hair in a messy bun, like she'd always do when she was alone and heading to bed. But instead of the bed, her feet wandered around his apartment. Her first stop was his bar, because god knows, she could really use a drink right now. She's pouring some Whiskey into a glass and sipped relishly, as she continued to study his apartment.
She passed his library and stroke over all the dusty books with the tip of her finger, taking another sip from her beverage. Chloe went up the stairs, because she'd never been to the top of his library.
She suddenly stops shocked when she reads the title of a specific, red book. The book was also silk, just like almost everything in here.
"Leaving hell without a king" she read out loud. Suddenly, she found it very hard to breath and she had hot and cold flashes. What if that book held the answers on how to bring Lucifer back and leave hell without a kind for all eternity? She was too afraid to take it out, so she drank the rest of her tequila and put the glass down before she took a deep breath and pulled it out of the shelf. She had to cough a lot as she was covered in a dust cloud, it must've sat there for years. The cover showed a summon circle. She was scared to her core to open it, because she didn't know what awaited her. And even worse, there might be horrible things written in there which might be true. And there might be solutions in there, that might work, but maybe not. All she knew is that she couldn't do this on her own. She needed to tell someone. But whom? Ella would completely freak out. Dan would probably even be glad he's gone. Linda just became a mother. There was only one person she could trust with this. So thats who she called.
As she poured herself another glass of whisky, the elevator opened and Eve walked in.
"I came as soon as I read your text Chloe. Listen, before we start..." she began to talk and looked to the ground ashamed.
"I am so, so sorry."
"Please, dont" Chloe said with a shaky voice.
"Yes, Chloe, I need to. It was all my fault. If I didn't come to earth in the first place..."
"Then what? Lucifer might have realised sooner that I am in love with him?" she screamed tryingly. Eve didn't know Chloe for so long, but she knew her long enough to know that Chloe was not the kind of woman that screams at anyone. She was always very calm, even when Lucifer brought her on cases.
"No, Chloe" she walked closer and laid her hand on her shoulder.
"He knew all along. When I first saw him look at you, I knew that he would never look at me like that. But thats the only thing I wanted for so long, for someone to look at me like Lucifer looks at you. You know what they say, you never get over your first" she chuckles softly.
Chloe's eyes were still filled with tears.
"You know" the detective said sniffling, "he was the first man who didn't want to change me. He loved me for me. My first boyfriend, he just wanted me for the one thing. Dan was nothing like the other guys, but he kept trying to shape me into someone I was not. Trixie is the best thing that has ever happened to me, but I told Dan I didn't want kids yet. But he made me feel so guilty about it, that nine months later I was in the hospital, holding a screaming baby in my arms and I didn't know what to do, or how to behave. I love her with all my heart and she's the best thing thats ever happened to her, but... Oh god. How do I tell Trixie where Lucifer's gone?" She asks Eve afraid.
"Maybe you don't have to. Show me that book you've been talking about!" Eve suggests, so Chloe wiped her tears away, cleared her throat and led the way. They opened the book carefully and both took a deep breath. Chloe was looking at Eve.
"Promise me, if we find a way to bring him back, we will try EVERYTHING to do so!" Chloe looked her deep in the eyes and waited for an answer.
Eve took another deep breath and nodded. "We will try everything if we find a way."
After Chloe poured them a drink, they started to study the theories and the stories written down in the book. They sat there for hours, and it was already 4am when they stumbled across something.
"Wait wait, listen to this" Chloe says, takes the book and reads out loud:
"Behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven,
and all the proud, yes, all who do wickedly will be stubble.
And the day which is coming shall burn them up ...
that will leave them neither root nor branch. ... You shall
trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles
of your feet on the day that I do this" Malachi 4:1, 3
Eves forehead is wrinkling as she is thinking.
"I know Malachi" she said.
"But I didn't see him in Heaven since thousands of years. He wrote the book of Malachi, the last book of the prophets section in the Hebrew bible" she explained.
"Wait, did you say prophets section? Is this another prophecy? And if so, what does it mean?"
"I dont know. Im not an angel, I dont know much about this stuff. We should ask Amenadiel!"
Chloe nodded and called him immediately.
"Chloe, why are you calling? Do you know how late it is?" He whispered into the phone, still sleepy.
"Amenadiel, we need your help. Lucifer went back to hell" Chloe explained, her voice breaking again. But Amenadiel just hung up, and a few seconds later they felt a light wind and he was standing on the balcony. He came towards them and looked at Eve, who looked at the ground, and then Chloe who had tears in her eyes again. He hugged Chloe tight and whispered "Im so sorry, Chloe. Im so sorry" she was squinting her eyes, trying to prevent them from watering again. She let go and cleared her throat.
"We found this book in his library. Do you know Malachi?" She asked after she let Amenadiel read the part she just read out loud to Eve.
Amenadiel nodded slightly.
"He was the writer of the last book of the prophets section in the Hebrew bible" he indirectly approved of Eve's assumption. "But he left heaven long ago, and I dont know where he went. I only know that he also had a prophecy about Lucifer in which was said: 'When the devil walks earth and finds his first love, evil shall be released'" he explained with a shocked face. All of them looked at each other.
"He... he was right with that prophecy. What if his others are also true? What if, when the hellfire dies, all souls are turned into dust and hell does not need to be ruled anymore?" Eve asks excited.
"Do you think this could be true?" Chloe asked Amenadiel with her eyes wide open.
"His recent prophecy was true. There's no reason to assume this one isn't."
"So, whats our next step?" Eve asked Amenadiel.
"You are the first woman to walk earth, Chloe is a detective and I am an angel. Our next step can be whatever we want it to be" he said with a smile.
Chloe and Eve had to smile too and raised their glasses.
"To bringing back Lucifer" Chloe toasted.
"To bringing back Lucifer" the rest repeated.
