Sometimes I sit here and think to myself, “Maybe I should go to bed early tonight...” and then I put my headphones back in with ATL blasting, and I look at my twitter feed, and I remember… There IS technically a reason that I’m up until 3am every morning. As I’m looking at my phone and reading 3:16am, just thinking to myself… 4 more hours until another little taste of hell. Even though I do have my best friend, G, to spend my days with, I kind of wish I had more than that. We’re just social outcasts. I mean my hairs purple, and hers is blue. I’ve got my lip pierced against my parent’s permission. All I ever wear is black ripped skinny jeans and band tees. No one even talks to me… Not like I’m very approachable, but whatever. Maybe I’ll meet someone tomorrow… Or not.

7:29… 7:30… *Insert annoying noise here… I wake up to this stupid screeching alarm every morning. Most mornings are the same… Like this one… I wake up next to my laptop, with my headphones still half in, but now playing some Green Day song that I’ve heard a million times over, yet never get sick of… And then there’s some yelling.

“COURTNEY! WAKE UP! GET READY FOR SCHOOL!”

That was my mom… Waiting outside of my door, like she does every morning, mainly because she thinks that I won’t go to school if she doesn’t stay until I leave… But it’s not like she’s wrong… I probably wouldn’t go…I hate it.

“Court? Are you up?”

I got out of bed, picked up a new band shirt of the floor and put it on. I grabbed my bag and opened the door.

“Ready”

“Honey… Can’t you at least try to look half presentable? It is picture day. I’d like a nice one for once.”

“Mom, you know I don’t like pictures. Give it up”

And then she told me how she “doesn’t like my tone” and asks me “Why can’t I be a nice girl”

“Whatever mom, G’s here”

I could hear G coming from a mile away. That old Honda Civic is louder than any car I’ve ever heard. Especially louder than mine… Mainly because it’s non-existent.

As I was getting into the car, mom waved from the window and signaled at us to turn the music down, so we just turned it up a little bit louder as usual.

After taking a few loops around a few blocks, we finally got to school, and at my school, if you’re going to be late, you should pretty much expect someone to let you know where you should’ve been 20 minutes ago, but I think they just gave up on me and G. We’re a lost cause. Now they just stare at us in disappointment.

I made my way to math while G went to law, or whatever she’s taking.

When I walked into math, every single person looked at me as if I’d killed someone, and Mr. Miller told me to take my seat.

By the time I got to ‘my seat’, our class got called down for pictures.

I grabbed my bag and made my way down behind everyone else. I got in the gym and waited in a line by myself, as usual. They snapped my picture and I headed straight to the door.

“Back to class Miss Courtney”, said Mr. Miller.

He knew just as much as I did that I wasn’t going back.

I went to the library, only to see G waiting for me. She knew me so well.

“I knew I’d find you here” she said with the slightest smirk on her face.

We walked to the back of the library and claimed our seats. I put my headphones in and laid my head down on the table. After a few minutes I felt a tap on my shoulder. Assuming it was a teacher I raised my head and rolled my eyes, “yes?” I said in my typical sarcastic voice. But to my surprise, it was a boy… And a cute one at that.

“Do you have a pencil?” he mumbled, in an adorable Australian accent.

I looked at him for a couple seconds and gave him a disapproving look.

“You’ve got one in your hand” I finally spit out.

“Yeah, but I really needed an excuse to come over and talk to you. I saw your Green Day shirt from across the room, I like it. And you’re kind of hot… so…”

I laughed a little. “What’s your name anyways?”

“Michael” he said “and you’re Court, right?”

“umm yeah… how exactly did you know that?”

G looked up and Michael looked at G.

“G?!” I shouted.

“SHH” I heard from across the library

“Well listen, Court, now that we know each other, how about you come to my band practice?”

“Band? Pftt”

“No, really” he said, “we’re called 5 seconds of summer, or 5sos for short, you should totally come. And you can bring a friend too, if you want” he said looking at G.

After a long, awkward silence, I finally gave in.

“Sure, but G, you’re coming.”

Michael got the biggest smile on his face that I’ve ever made anyone have. It kind of made me a little happier.

“Great!” he said

And then he winked and walked back to where he was before.

I looked at G. “What have I gotten us in to?”

“Hush” she said, “I heard that Calum Hood guy plays in the band. Maybe I can get on his good side… If you know what I mean”

I shook my head a laid it back down on the table.

“Wake me up for second period… Or third… Yeah, third.”

“Okay, sure” said G, “I’ll wake you up for third”
