..."Laura! We're gonna be late to the splatfest! C'mon!"
"Ok, Cynthia! Geez, slow down! Is it really this exciting?!"
Today was a big day. Another splatfest was coming around. This time, it was about two popular drinks: Coral Cola and Woomy POP. The only two sources of safe drinking water for inklings currently known to them. Inklings could still just drink plain water; it has been proven that inklings dissolving immediately upon contact with the liquid is just a myth. However, too much water can make an inkling feel sick, or dissolve one if they're fully submerged in the water. So, unless you wanted to take small sips of water at a time throughout the day, these two drinks were your best bet.
Cynthia raced up to the city square, Laura by her side. Cynthia was an octoling with naturally green hair. Outside of matches her hair would appear in this color. Laura was an Inkling with purple hair. They had matching splatfest t-shirts for the event.
They came to a stop at the edge of a huge crowd gathered in Inkopolis square. They were standing around the suspended stage above them, from where Pearl and Marina, idols to everyone who lives in 2nd Inkopolis, stared down at the crowd. "Y'all ready to rock it tonight?!" Pearl screamed into her mic. The crowd went wild with cheers and booyahs.
Marina turned to Pearl. "Pearl, we have a new sponsor tonight, right?" Pearl looked at her. "I think you're right, Marina!"
Turning to the crowd, she put the microphone to her mouth. "This performance is brought to you by AquaTek!"
"AquaTek?" Thought Laura. "Doesn't aqua have to do with water?" Lauren looked at Cynthia, who merely shook her head and looked back up at the stage.
Pearl and Marina then announced that the splatfest was underway and started their performance. People spread out across Inkopolis Square, dancing as they listened to the two stars sing.
A sense of foreboding. A shiver down the spine, and then the thoughts came.
She wondered the whole night. However, she didn't have time to worry about this. She needed to compete in the splatfest and do good to make her brother proud.
Her brother had gone missing a long time ago. He was a renowned splatfest champ and an almost famous competitor in the splat games. He was the best competitor she knew. Then, he just disappeared one day. Since then, she's been striving to be like him, so if he ever came back he'd be proud of her.
She had just come out of another match when the drain near the back alley and Grizzco came alive. Ink spouted out of it. Then, a white haired inkling in a kimono popped up. Beckoning Laura to come closer. She wanders up to Marie.
"What is it, Marie? Can't you see I'm in the middle of something?" Marie suddenly steps off the drain. Black ink spews out the drain, and Callie pops out. They both turn to her. Marie gestures her a little closer, then proceeds to whisper in her ear. "I'm assuming you heard the announcement Pearl and Marina made at the opening ceremony."
"Yes," retorted Laura, "but what does that have to do with anything?"
Callie looks closely at her. "We thought it sounded kinda fishy, y'know, with the whole 'aqua' thing. Can't see why Off The Hook would ever let them sponsor their show." She leaned closer. "Doesn't the name seem kinda suspicious to you?"
"Maybe, but I'm not losing this splatfest based off of some stupid superstition!"
Laura was getting worked up. She had a short temper. Being left with no older brother or parents to care for her, she had to fend for herself most of her life. The Squid Sisters had taken her in a few times, but she always ended up back on the streets. She was mad at her parents for leaving her behind, and directing that anger towards others made her feel better. Or so she would think, but, in the end, she would end up feeling awful for it. That's how she met Cynthia.
