TWO lengths has every day,
Its absolute extent–
And area superior
By hope or heaven lent.
Eternity will be
Velocity, or pause,
At fundamental signals
From fundamental laws.
To die, is not to go–
On doom’s consummate chart
No territory new is staked,
Remain thou as thou art.
Emily Dickinson
Prologue
Eternity
The Winter Queen lounged on her throne of ice, head resting in her hands. A single flower lay on her lap, a white rose. She caressed the velvety petals, watching the frost spread from her fingertips. She tossed the flower away.
“Tamsin,” she stated, acknowledging the Summer Queen’s presence with a nod. She didn’t have to look up. She could feel the heat radiate from her sister’s golden skin.
“Devodie,” the Summer Queen replied.
“Why are you here?” Devodie asked, still not looking up. Tamsin sighed.
“You know perfectly well why I am here, dear sister.”
“Ah, Tamsin, this is where you are wrong.” She rose, her dress rippling in beautiful threads of silver. The Winter Queen stepped down from her throne towards her sibling. She stared into Tamsin’s golden eyes with her own silver-blue ones, frost lining her lashes. “Speak.” She commanded.
Tamsin glared at her with her bright gaze.
“As you know, their have been sightings of mortals along the borders of Eternity and the Eternal Forest. I fear that our kingdoms are not properly protected.”
Devodie laughed. “Tamsin, I can assure you that Decca is protected.”
Tamsin looked away. “As you wish Devodie, but I will inform Lysander and Sable all the same.”
Devodie nodded, smirking. “Go on, inform the other queens, but I know our sisters will agree. Eternity is safe.”
Tamsin shook her head, her eyes sad. “Remember your choice when the time comes. Protection is the safest way.”
But the Winter Queen waved her away. “Farewell sister.” She called, as she rested on her throne again. “Eternity is safe.”
