"Too busy to come over and get ready with us?" Savannah complained loudly while getting ready to go to dinner and then the bar.
"Do you even live here any more Scar?" Brea asked. "Jessa! Did you take my boots again?"Jessa, her hands busy pulling her shoulder-length hair into a ponytail, motioned to the end of the bed where Brea's boots laid.
"Sorry Sav, but Tony wanted to -"
"EWW! I do NOT want to hear about you screwing your bajillionaire-playboy boyfriend Scar!" Brea yelled out, nearly missing the empty bottle of lotion Savannah whipped at her.
"Don't you listen to her Scar! She's just being moody again. I want details!" She cackled.
"I am not moody." Brea threw the lotion bottle back at Savannah, missing her completely. "I just didn't want to hear about any sexcapades before I go into work tonight."
"Here we go." Jessa moved to the side of the bathroom furthest from her two friends.
"What?!?" Savanah exclaimed, knocking her phone off the bathroom counter.
"Hello?" Scarlett's voice cried out from the dropped phone. "What's happening?"
"You haven't missed anything. Just the usual Savannah over-reacting to Brea bailing out again." Jessa sighed, handing the phone back to Scarlett's cousin.
"I'm not even going to ask you what it is this time Brea Marie." Savannah scolded.
"Someone called off and I had to cover."
"It's always something. Aren't there other caregivers that can cover the shift?" Jessa asked, adjusting her snug, blue, t-shirt, ignoring Brea's head shaking 'no'. "I mean, it has nothing at all to do with you thinking all men are scum of the Earth, right? You need to move past Shane."
"Don't mention his name!" Brea growled back, sitting herself on the bed to put on her boots.
"Like I was saying, Tony wanted me to get ready over at his place. We're still meeting up – well except for Brea." Scarlett continued, in hopes of breaking up a potential arguement.
Savannah was about to ask Scarlett if she could bring her cute black cardigan to borrow, but she stopped getting herself, eying Jessa from head to toe. "Hell no. Go change."
"What's Jessa wearing this time?" Scarlett demanded.
"Hold on cuz." Savannah switched the call over to video chat. "Some things are better left shown than described. I have no words."
"Back up, I can't see the whole outfit!"
"Here we go again." Jessa muttered, before twirling herself on display. "Jeans and a t-shirt. It's what I wear 98% of the time Scar."
"You can't wear that!" The cousins exclaimed in unison.
Brea leaned against the bedroom doorway, staring at the commotion in the bathroom. "Of course she can, or did she not tell you yet?" She smirked.
"Brea! You promised!" Brea shrugged her shoulders in response.
"Why not? I'm only looking out for you." She crossed her arms across her chest. "She's not going out tonight either. She's going to Steve's house to make dinner. Again." Jessa's face flushed a bright red.
"Who the hell is Steve???" Scarlett demanded over the phone. "Get back here Jessa Rose!"
Jessa slouched her shoulders in defeat. "What do you want?" She asked softly. She wasn't really ready to announce any dating prospects she may or may not have.
"Steve. Spill." Savannah demanded, trying to intimidate her slightly younger friend while still trying to put on her eyeliner.
"Steve's a coworker that I spend time with." Jessa tried to will blush from her cheeks.
Savannah looked over at Brea. "And?"
Brea looked at Savannah and shrugged her shoulders. "Don't ask me. All I know is that she works with him, she goes over to his house for dinner a couple of nights a week – when we're not home, and he sounds hot over the phone. I've never actually met him."
"I'm not dating Steve, so can y'all just drop it? Please?" Jessa begged her friends.
"Not dating?" Scarlett tapped her chin in thought. "What does he look like? Hair color? Eye color?"
"He's blond and has blue eyes, but that doesn't mean anything because he's my FRIEND." Jessa insisted.
"You're finally getting laid again?!?" Savannah shouted a bit louder than she wanted. "I mean, it's been a while! Since college, right? It's about time you got yourself a friend with bennies! And he's blond with blue eyes? He better be fucking dreamy when we meet him."
Scarlet put her flat iron down. "We're meeting him soon."
Jessa lowered her head. "It's not at all like that and even if I were dating Steve, he's old fashioned." She bumped herself into Brea as she left to get her hoodie. "Thanks a lot." She grumbled.
"I'm only looking out for you Jessa!" She smirked. "So, what are you making him tonight?" She called down the hallway.
"Spaghetti and meatballs. It's just a casual dinner with friends." Jessa yelled back, her car keys jangling in her hand.
Savannah and Scarlett shared a look and arched their brows at each other. "You've got a crush!"
"Not on Steve." Jessa protested, her face growing warmer with each insinuation.
"Seriously though, we need to meet this Steve guy Jessa." Brea demanded. "You've been seeing him since last spring."
"It's late fall Jessa Rose!" Scarlett exclaimed.
"How did you keep this from us this long?" Savannah pipped up.
"You guys are too overprotective."
"After what happened last time? You're damned right I am." Scarlett retorted, all airs of lightheartedness vanishing from her voice. "I promised to look out for you."
Savannah and Brea cleared their throats uncomfortably. It was an unwritten rule that they never spoke about Jessa's romantic past. Jessa lowered her eyes. "I've got to go." Jessa turned from the doorway and left.
"I told you not to press her Scar!" Savannah hissed.
"She doesn't act like it bothers her when it clearly does, and yet, we dance around the subject every time it comes up." Brea leaned herself against the doorway and checked her phone for the time. "I'm sick of it. If Jessa has any chance of moving on, she needs to find a guy that's able to handle that kind of stuff."
"You give great advice, Brea. Maybe you should look into following it too." Scarlett reprimanded.
"I knew Shane was a sleaze bag. It was my own fault for staying as long – the signs were there." She raked her fingers through the waves of curls in her hair. "Jessa never saw it coming, and when she did, it was too late for her to get out of it on her own."
"You worry too much." Savannah flipped her hair with her hand, satisfied with her look. "She'll be fine. She's a grown ass woman."
"I know she's twenty-seven years old now, but I still think we need to meet Steve." Scarlett insisted.
The other two nodded in agreement.
