Matt took his time stepping down the school staircase. He looked into one of the science classes and noticed that a teacher was placing different types of rocks on the table in front of the classroom. He cringed, immediately he thought of his little sister, Tammy, and her wonderful new powers.
A few weeks ago, Tammy Vaisley discovered that she could move rocks with her mind. Their parents had spent the time since then trying to figure out where these powers came from. They were able to locate a group of people who called themselves "giftlyns" and they said that Tammy's powers were similar to their own. There was a meeting scheduled for a few of them to come by to determine if Tammy was a giftlyn. If Tammy wasn't, they'd be back to square one.
Matt glanced at the clock as his English class entered into the school library. It was almost two o'clock; still another forty minutes left of school. With the excitement over this meeting and tomorrow being Halloween, the school day felt endless. His English teacher had brought the class to the library to gather information for their upcoming reports on Shakespeare. His teacher required that at least one source material had to be a book. So while his classmates had raced towards the computers, Matt and his friend, Keith, stuck near the bookshelves.
Matt glanced towards the librarian's desk. The usual librarian was absent and in her place was a young man, one of the school's seniors. The young man was leaning back in the chair; his feet were up on the desk and a comic book was in his hands.
"You do realize you'll be the only one who won't be there, right?" Keith reminded him for the tenth time. Matt nodded his head.
"It's not like I volunteered to miss the game" He muttered. He pick a book off the shelf, flipped through the pages, and placed it back on the shelf. Keith continued to follow his friend, not checking out any of the books as he should've been.
"Coach said he might even let me play tonight!" Keith exclaimed. They glanced to look at both their teacher and the librarian. Mr. Breck was busy helping another student and the substitute librarian was still reading his comic.
"Do you think I'll throw up?" Keith asked "The last time I played in a game, I threw up"
"Wrap it up! We'll be heading back to class in five minutes." Mr. Breck said. Matt and Keith quickly grabbed whatever Shakespeare related books they could find. They hurried over to the librarian's desk. The substitute librarian told them to wait for him to finish the page he was on.
While waiting for the man to finish, Matt looked over at the box of books that were for sale. As Matt glanced at the books in the box, one book caught his eye. It was decked out in gold and scarlet; something was scribbled with a silver ink on the cover and in such a fancy form that Matt couldn't make it out. On the side of the book was a shape, a golden circle with a golden hexagon inside it. Unlike the rest of the designs on the book, the strange shaped looked more like it had been carved in. The smooth book felt light in his hands; it felt as if it would take all of his will power to put it down.
"If you wanna buy that it's fifty-cents" said the substitute librarian.
Matt looked down at the book. He wasn't sure what had possessed him to purchase it. Once he handed the money to the man, it was too late. The substitute librarian handed Matt the books that he was checking out from the library. Matt took off through the library doors.
After school, Matt barely beat his dad home .He watched as his dad came through the door; the man placed his bag of papers down near the umbrella holder.
"How was school today?" His dad asked. Matt shrugged, gesturing to the copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream that was laying on the coffee table. Matt's father nodded, talking about how he had his own students read the play the previous semester. His dad taught three courses at a local college. Two of them were on the works of C.S Lewis. To say his parents had an obsession with guy and the Chronicles of Narnia was an understatement. If the shelf of the collected books in the living room wasn't any indication, Matt's middle name was Edmund and his sister's middle name was Lucy.
