Chapter five: Run

Growls ripped through the woods, the sound echoing in my ears. Trees whized past as I stumbled over branches and roots. I couldn’t figure out why I was running or where I was going, but the fear, the bone chilling fear I felt, was real. Twigs snapped behind me, I didn’t have to look back to know the monster that was chasing me was directly behind me, taunting me to look back, but I had to keep moving, keep running into and from the unknown. He could have caught me by now, but I knew he liked the chase. His growls taunted me, laughed at me. I was going to die.

A clearing in the brush appeared twenty feet away, all I had to do was make it there, and I would be safe. I knew I would be safe, but I didn’t know how or why I knew that, I just had to make it there. The growls stopped and I was more afraid than ever. I was two steps away from the brush, two steps away from safety, when the beast jumped out from behind the old Oak, its razor sharp teeth inches from my throat-

I awoke in a cold sweat, swallowing the scream that demanded to be let free. With my heart pounding in my chest, I quickly got up from bed and padded my way to the bathroom, splashing cold water over my sweat slicked face.

“It was just a dream.” I scolded myself. “A very real dream…” I took in my appearance in the mirror, my pale skin looked taut and lifeless, my usually clear blue eyes seemed dull and haunted as light dark rings formed under my eyes. I looked like the after picture for a Halloween ghost makeup tutorial. Sighing, I straightened myself and decided on going for a run.

Tip toing, I made my way out of my room. It was only five am, and most of the house was still asleep, save for a few that could be heard moving around. As I slipped through the porch door, a crisp chill greeted me. I reveled in the feel of it, the chill awakening my still sleep deprived body. As I began my light jog, memories of my dream swarmed my mind. Trees whized past me as my feet pounded harder on the ground, carrying me faster and faster away-away from what? My dream? My own mind?

I couldn’t stop, running away from whatever it was that had me so scared was all I could do. Twigs snapped under my feet as the brush became slightly thicker. Making a rash decision, I swerved to the right, my feet still carrying me as fast as they could. As I continued to run, an opening appeared twenty feet ahead of me. I didn’t register it at first, until I was almost upon the clearing. Stopping mid run, I gazed at my surroundings.

This was the same clearing in which I had dreamt about. My head spun as a sense of deja vu and fear rolled through me. Slowly, I began to walk towards the clearing, casting glances around me. My hands shook with every step. The woods were quiet as I closed the distance between me and the clearing. The quiet unnerved me, it was around six in the morning, the time most animals in the woods would already be awake.
