History

Its ancient name was Peparethos, as mentioned by Thucydides. Around 1600 BC, Minoans from Crete settled the island and their mythical King Staphylos, son of Dionysus and Ariadne, introduced the wine to the locals. After the Mycenaean period, Skopelos was occupied by the Dolopians from Thessaly who used the island as a military base.

Skopelos TownSkopelos Town is the closest village to the port. This little town which is the capital and main port of Skopelos is quite picturesque with lovely whitewashed houses, flower gardens and colorful balconies. Its fountains, its many little whitewashed churches, narrow streets and alleys compose the beautiful setting of the village.

Glossa village Skopelos

Glossa is the second major settlement of Skopelos, located 25 km north west of the island's capital. Glossa is built amphitheatrically on the mountain slopes, 250 meters above the sea. It is surrounded with pine forests, almond trees and plane trees. 

Elios village Skopelos

Elios or Neo Klima village is located 19 km west of the town of Skopelos, surrounded by dense pine woods. The first houses are built around the picturesque port in the lower part of Elios.

Panormos beach

 SkopelosPanormos is located 12 km northwest of Skopelos Town and the route is quite pleasant despite the long distance. The sandy beach is surrounded by a beautiful bay and is made up of two small islands. It is a very popular area with a lovely environment, many facilities and an impressive green setting. Near the beach is the village of Panormos, where there are many taverns, restaurants and shops in the area. There are ancient wall remains next to the sea. 

Stafilos beach Skopelos

Stafilos is one of the nearest beaches in the city of Skopelos. The amazing bay is only 5 km from the capital and can be reached by local bus or private car. A beautiful fish tavern welcomes visitors and some wooden steps lead to the beautiful bay with fine gray sand and crystal clear waters.

Kastani beach Skopelos

Kastani is one of the most beautiful beaches in Skopelos with beautiful crystal waters and white sand 15 km west of the town of Skopelos. It is surrounded by remarkable pine trees that reach the edge of the coast.

Hovolo beach Skopelos

Hovolo is one of Skopelos most beautiful beaches because of its crystal clear waters and peaceful surroundings. It is situated on the west coast of the island 18 km from the town of Skopelos. There are actually three amazing coves in the Hovolo region, each with its own unique beauty. They are all surrounded by enormous rocks with sparse vegetation on the shore. 

Agnondas beach Skopelos

The paved road from the beach of Stafilos leads to a beautiful bay, the beautiful Agnondas beach. During antiquity, the name Agnondas was given to the bay by its inhabitants to honor Agnodas, who won a race at the Olympic Games in 569 BC.

Elios beach Skopelos

Elios beach is 19 km to the west of the town of Skopelos. The beach is pleasant enough, but the deep earthly rumblings intermittently affect this part of the island. The unsightly village was created after the earthquake in 1965 dislocated the old climate hillside village.
