Chapter 1

I never tried to think about a life without him, because every time I did, I just couldn't stop thinking about where and with whom I’d be and that frustrated me. The first time I met him, I knew from that day on that I would spent the rest of my life with him. Well, I knew I WANTED to. However, some things turned out to be different. You want to know why? I live in the USA, and I met my boyfriend when I was on vacation in Turkey. That’s right; I’m in a long-distance relationship.

Let’s start at the beginning: June, 2008, around eleven o’clock. My family and I were running across the airport. A total of 8 suitcases and then everyone had their own carry-on baggage with lots of stuff in it as well. While my mother was asking around, trying to find the right check-in desk, I glanced at my phone. No messages, no ‘have a good trip!’ wish. Why didn’t my best friend Tina send me a quick message? She could have just said ‘take care’, but instead of thinking of me, she was probably making out with her boyfriend. Everywhere we went, even at school, they just couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. It was disgusting. She’s my best friend, we’ve been friends for quite a few years now, but when she met Robert, her boyfriend, a year ago, she spent less time with me and we barely talked after school. I didn’t understand the whole ‘boyfriend’ thing. How could a boy change your life? How come all girls want to have a boyfriend anyway?

‘Ella, why aren’t you moving? Come on!’

I looked around and saw my father waiting in a line. He was holding all our passports and id-cards. I walked slowly towards them and placed my suitcase in such a way that I could sit on it. I didn’t have much sleep last night. I was so excited about this vacation; we were talking about it for months.

I looked at my sister, well... one of them. I was the oldest and she was my parents’ second child. We share a room and even though we sometimes argue, I still love her.

My other sisters, the youngest ones, were both very sweet. I didn’t have much trouble with them. Then there were my two little brothers. The youngest one is six; the other one just turned 9.

‘Good morning, may I have your passports please.’

My father handed over the passports as we were waiting for the woman to take a look at us and our pictures. You could see that he is very tired. He didn’t even manage to brush his teeth this morning, although he took a quick shower. I stared at my father for a while, when my sister was trying to get me off my suitcase. The woman behind the counter was asking for all our suitcases.

A few minutes later, she gave the passports back to my father together with our boarding passes. Every minute I got more excited. I’ve only been in Turkey once but that was four or five years ago. I didn’t remember anything. I slightly remembered the duration of the trip. At that time, I hated leaving home and my friends. I don’t know how my parents managed to get me on the plane, but I’m glad they did.

While we were walking towards the gate, I glanced once again at my phone and again, nothing. This time I put it off and put it back in my pocket.

Finally, we arrived at our gate. We didn’t have to wait long, fortunately. When we finally got on the plane and taken our seats, the waiting part has begun. I grabbed a magazine immediately and tried to amuse myself during the 8 hour trip. We would land in the Netherlands, Amsterdam, where we had to wait a few hours and then our trip continued to Turkey, Istanbul. We’d be there tomorrow. I couldn’t wait. I turned my head and closed my eyes: time for a little nap.
