Chapter 29

Valerie’s P.O.V.

“Valerie!” Ashton calls out from behind me. I stop and fidget awkwardly until he catches up to me. “Can we talk?” He asks.

“Class starts in like, three minutes Ashton.” I tell him gently. “We should just get to class.”

“Val, please.” He says quietly, his eyes watering slightly.

“We can talk after class.” I say.

“Valerie, no, we need to talk right now-”

The warning bell rings, cutting him off.

“Let’s just get to class, okay?” I hike my bag farther up my shoulder and walk towards the classroom. Ashton trails awkwardly to my side, hands in his pockets, head down. I walk into the class and take my seat, facing the front of the classroom. The bell rings and a random lady walks in.

“My name is Mrs. Anderson. Ms. Jones is out sick today, so I will be your substitute. We’ll be watching a movie about some of the world’s greatest poets. She put in her notes that you may move seats, but you have to keep the noise level down or two pages of notes will be required. I’ll start the movie now. You may move seats.”

I groan quietly as Ashton practically flies across the classroom to take the empty seat next to me. He sets his things down and takes a deep breath. “Will you listen to me now?”

“Ashton, I was listening to you.” I tell him with a frown.

May clears her throat awkwardly before standing up. “I’m gonna go sit by Brandon.” She says before excusing herself.

“You scared May off!” I tell Ashton with a frown. “She’s the only female on the face of this planet who can tolerate me.”

“Val, I want to apologize for what I said last night. Everything. I didn’t mean it. I just, when I, you know, I get in this mood and I’m just a huge dick to everyone and you didn’t deserve that at all. I was being such an asshole. Please just don’t be mad at me, Val. I love you so much and I don’t want you to leave me because I was being a dick and-”

“Ashton, I’m not gonna leave you. Calm down.” I tell him, taking a hold of his hand. “What you said last night was way out of line. I understand that you were upset, but honestly, it made me feel like shit. Please don’t do it again.”

“I’m sorry, Valerie.” He says quietly. “I’m so fucking sorry. I was just in a horrible mood and I’m such a dick and I know you hate me but I love you and I don’t want you to be upset with me because you’re the only thing that keeps me going and if you left me I’d-”

“Ashton.” I cut him off. “Seriously, calm down. It’s okay. I forgive you.” I tell him, even though I don’t completely mean it. He looks like he’s about to burst into tears.

“Are you sure?” He asks, quietly.

“I’m positive.” I lie. “Just please, calm down. I don’t want you to get worked up, okay? I love you.”

“I love you so much.” He sniffles.

Mrs. Anderson flips the lights off and the movie starts playing. Ashton scoots his chair closer to mine and I rest my head on his shoulder. He puts his head on top of mine and sniffles quietly. I sigh and tug the edge of his sweater up. He’s not wearing the bandages anymore. I look at his wrist and feel a pang of guilt coursing through me. If I hadn’t been an idiot and gotten grounded I could’ve been there earlier to make sure he was okay.
