Mariska's POV:
It's the start of spring break and I can't think of a better way to spend it. As I stand with Debra, Ali, and Isabel in Debra's kitchen laughing and talking I look toward the living room and see the husbands walking towards us. Peter walks up behind me and wraps his arms around my waist. I lean back against him and rest my head on his shoulder as he kisses the side of my head. "Awe!" I roll my eyes at the three giggling women.
Peter says, "The kids are asleep." I smirk. "I'm surprised you're not asleep after all that running around you did today old man." The room erupts in laughter. "We'll discuss this later when we're alone." Peter breaths in my right ear as his arms tighten around my waist. His deep voice sends shivers down my spine and I can't wait to get home. Before I can say anything else my cell phone starts ringing. Peter releases me and I pull the phone out of my pocket and answer it.
"Hello? This is she." Peter is now standing beside me. "Is she okay?" I run my left hand through my hair. "What happened?" The room is silent and I feel all eyes one me. "What hospital? We're on the way." I hang up the phone as a tear rolls down my cheek. Peter wipes the tear away and I look at him. "Makenzie was rushed to the hospital but they wouldn't tell me why. They just said to get there." Peter's eyes grow wide as the tears stream down my face. He pulls me to him and I wrap my arms around his waist as I bury my head in his chest. He kisses the top of my head. "I'll go get the kids and we'll go to the hospital."
I feel another hand on my back and turn my head to see Debra, Ali, and Isabel now standing beside us. "The kids are already asleep. They can stay here while you two go to the hospital. I don't mind watching them." I let go of Peter and put my phone back in my pocket. "Are you sure Deb?" She nods. "I'm positive. Now get out of here and give Makenzie our love." I give them a quick hug. "Thank you so much. One of us will call and let you know what's going on." Without waiting for a response, Peter and I go in to the living room and we each give August, Amaya, and Andrew a kiss and then we run out the front door and get in the SUV.
"What hospital is she at?" I look at Peter. "Bellevue." He pulls out of the parking space and heads for the hospital. He reaches over and grabs my hand giving it a squeeze. "She'll be okay right? I mean she has to be okay!" We stop at a red light and Peter looks over at me. "She's strong just like her mama, I'm sure she'll be okay baby." All I can do is nod. The lump in my throat grows bigger the closer we get to the hospital.
We get there in record time due to Peter breaking nearly every traffic law known to man. Thankfully we didn't get pulled over. As soon as Peter parks we're both out of the vehicle and heading to the ER. We stop at the nurses station. "We're looking for our daughter."
"Name?" She asks without even looking up from her phone. "Makenzie Hargitay-Hermann." She looks at the computer then back at her phone. "I don't see the name."
"Look lady, if you can't find her in the computer then find somebody who can. I'm about thirty seconds from coming across this desk and doing it myself!" An older nurse with gray hair and a warm smile comes over. "Is there a problem?" She has a look of genuine concern on her face. Peter places a hand on the small of my back.
"We're looking for our daughter." He points to the nurse still playing on her phone. "But she says she's not in the computer." The older nurse looks at the younger one and shakes her head. She looks back at us. "What's your daughter's name?" I say, "Makenzie Hargitay-Hermann."
"Of course. I just need to see some identification from both of you." And that's when it dawns on me that I don't have my purse. As if reading my mind Peter places my purse on the desk in front of me. We both pull out our IDs and hand them to the nurse. She looks at them then hands them back to us. "She is here. She got out of surgery three hours ago." I raise an eyebrow as I exclaim, "three hours ago! I wasn't called until forty-five minutes ago!"
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I don't know how that happened. Let me get her doctor for you." She scurries off down the hall and returns less than two minutes later with a doctor that looks to be a few years younger than me. She holds out her hand. I'm Dr. Curtis." Peter and I shake her hand. "Makenzie has authorized me to tell you everything. After we talk, I'll take you back to see her." Peter and I nod.
"So I've been informed that you weren't called until a little while ago and because of that I'm going to assume you weren't told much if anything at all. Makenzie has quite a few injuries. She has a broken arm, fractured ribs, a black eye, a bruised jaw, and a concussion. She was also shot twice in the abdomen from which an internal bleed developed. The surgery went well, we were able to find the source of the bleed and repair it. We did have to remove her spleen and part of her liver as that's where the bullets impacted." I gasp as the tears stream down my face. Peter pulls me closer to him and squeezes my hip. "How long will she be in the cast?" Peter asks. "Well, the fracture was so significant that we had to reset the ulna. She will need to be in the cast 6-12 weeks. Length is dependent on individual healing tendencies." Peter kisses my head as Dr. Curtis continues. "She lost a lot of blood. Now I don't know if she told you but she was pregnant."
"Was?" She looks at me as she nods and I can see the sadness in her eyes. "Yes ma'am. She was pregnant but she lost the baby." I turn my head in to Peter as my cries get harder. Peter says, "there's something you're not telling us doc. What is it?" I look at her just as she's looking back from the nurse. "I'm afraid your daughter was raped."
I raise a hand to my mouth and try to hold back my sobs. I manage to ask, "have you done a rape kit?" Dr. Curtis nods. "Makenzie said she wanted to get it over with. There are Detectives waiting to speak with her but she said she wants to see the two of you first."
"Take us to see our daughter please." I can hear the quiver in Peter's voice. Once again Dr. Curtis nods. She turns and walks down the hall followed by the nurse and us. We stop outside the room and Peter and I look in the window. For being twenty-two she looks so small and fragile lying in that bed. She's got an orange cast on her right arm and her right eye is swollen shut. Sitting beside her bed is Derek, her best friend. They've been getting into trouble together since the age of three.
"How long has he been here?" I look at Dr. Curtis and the nurse. The nurse says, "he came in with her. He's actually the one that found her if I understand correctly."
We hear a beep and the nurse looks at her watch. "Time to check her vitals." Dr. Curtis nods and looks at us. "If you need anything at all don't hesitate to have somebody page me." We nod, say thank you, and shake her hand. She walks away and we follow the nurse into Makenzie's room. All mistakes are mine. Read and review. Big thanks to my cousin for all her help!! Love ya cuz!!!!
