“Hey, what happened to your wrist?”

“My what...?”

Alex’s eyes widened, his heart slamming into his chest, he felt like he was about to throw up.

Quickly, he pulled his sleeve down, folding his arms across his chest. He needed to think of an excuse, but it was always hard when you were on the spot like that.

“Your wr-wrist, it’s like it’s been s-slashed, or something.” Jack’s voice was shaken as he began to worry for his new friend. Alex wouldn’t do that... would he?

“It’s nothing! For fuck sake Jack, stop questioning me!” Alex shoved the foreigner hard in the chest, anger flowing through his veins, his heart pumping the frustration.

“Why are you always like this, Alex!?”

The two boys rose to their feet, Jack stood taller than Alex as he looked down on him.

“Always like what? Fuck, Jack, you don’t know me. You don’t know anything about me. You’re always jumping to conclusions like we’re best fucking friends forever, or something ridiculous like that. Well we’re not, we aren’t even close to that.” Alex’s fists were clenched as his eyes looked to the ground, he began to chew at his bottom lip through habit.

“You don’t think I know that already? I try my fucking hardest to be nice to you, and you throw it back in my face. Then just when I think you’re going to show me some respect, you turn on me. It’s like you’re a time bomb ticking, Alex!”

Jack didn’t want to raise his voice, he wasn’t even shouting in a threatening manner, he was just desperate. Alex was his only hope, and he would do anything, fucking anything to earn that boy’s trust.

“I’m not listening to this, coming here was a fucking mistake.” Alex shook his head, turning around, because he knew that once again, Jack was right. Alex Gaskarth didn’t like to be proved wrong, but Jack seemed to be the fucking master at it. He didn’t want to breathe the same air as him anymore.

Jack stayed silent, he watched as Alex padded through his hallway, slipped on his shoes, and grasped the door knob.

“Wait.”

The American couldn’t hold it in for any longer.

He stepped towards the male who turned to look at him, tears were welling in the corners of his eyes.

“A-are you crying?”

State the obvious Jack, nice one.

Alex rubbed vigorously at his eyes, “No, I’m not a fucking baby.” He muttered, “What do you want? You said what you needed to say, and I don’t want to hear anymore of it.”

Jack sighed as his eyes wandered up and down the lost little boy in front of him, “Come on, stay.”

“Why should I?”

“Your wrist, you done it yourself, right?”

“... What’s it to you? Gonna fucking label me now, are you?”

“No. You aren’t the only one, Alex. This world doesn’t revolve around you, stop acting like it does.”

“I’m not, when did I sa- Wait... I’m not the only one? So...”

“Yeah. Me and self-harming go way back.”

Alex found himself sat on the comfortable couch once more, his teeth sunk into his lip as he waited for Jack to return from the kitchen.
