I stare as she swiftly waves with a sweet smile and walks gracefully and casually out of the room. Aleeyah always did defeat her opponents with her passive aggression. But I was always on the other side of the victims, so I admired it rather than feared it.
I don't even want to imagine what lie Melody must've spread about me, but it can't be good. By tomorrow the whole school will have their backs turned on me. The world of popularity was always dangerous territory and to be fair I knew that. I knew that people could suddenly be dropped down the social chain, with more enemies in the end. Went from a nobody to a foe. Risking everything just to have a chance to be in the spotlight for a few dumb years of school. I don't want to make Noah wait, and if I think about it more I think I'll just cry more. I regather my bags and head out.I see Noah's old red car parked in the lot, engine running. It was only recently that law allowed him to drive without a licensed adult in the car with him, but he acted as if he had been driving forever.
I just want to go home really really badly. And cry
into my pillow until my parents and sister got home.
I swing open the squeaky car door.
"Hey baby," he says kissing my head as I piled in. I momentarily thought about telling him everything but I quickly thought against it.
"What's the matter Harp, feeling blue?", he asks brushing my hair out of my eyes. I bury my head in his sweater.
"How did you know?", I ask in a muffled voice.
"Combination of Melly texting me demanding me to immediately break up with you, you just looked mopey, flushed face...and Harps I always know when your sad," he says embracing me in a hug and holding me there.
"So are you going to listen to Melly?" I say with puppy dog eyes, knowing he wouldn't. He trusted me more than her, and I knew that. He KNEW I knew that.
"Hmm, last time I checked, she wasn't the boss of me", he replies ruffling my hair.
"So..."
"Of course not baby I love you," he says in a more serious tone.
"What did she even tell you?"
"Well—"
"No wait I can't bare to hear it! Wait...just tell me"
He shows me the text.-heyyy Noe!! I'm so sry that it's come to this, but Harper isn't rly the grl we think she is. She's done some pretty horrid things and I don't rly think u want ur name to be associated with hers anymore. It's ur call but me being the person who brought you together, I think it's wise to end ur relationship with her. Bye 👋 noe!!-
"It's sad because it kinda shows how she's never been in a real relationship, she's only been where reputation comes first."
"I love Melly...well—anyways she always did have her flaws. She seemed incapable of holding on to anything for any length of time and was sick with envy if anyone else did. And she's so chipper telling you to break up with me..." I trail off.
"Seriously Harps what did you do to piss her off so much. She loved you like a sister, and now she's basically ruining your social life."
"NOTHING Noah! I don't know! Maybe I did something by accident, or said something in passing, or she's jealous or...I really don't know!" I whined miserably.
"Okay calm down babe I believe you," he says rubbing my shoulders. "Let's get outta here."
"My grandma should be at my house, wanna come over for a movie and a snack?" I ask.
"No duh, Harps!" He says fist bumping me. He revs the engine and pulls out into the street.
