Natasha's POV
"The history of the--" There was a knock the door and our history teacher grumbled, going to answer the door. She took a small slip of paper from a student, who I assumed was an office assistant, and then closed the door. "Natasha Romanoff, Sharon Carter, to the dean's office. Bring your belongings with you."
I eyed Sharon warily and picked my backpack up, walking out of the classroom. I walked quickly down the hall and knocked on the dean's door. He opened it after a couple nerve-racking seconds and Sharon and I saw Steve, already sitting there, calm as ever. He waved casually and Sharon rushed to sit next to him. I took a seat on the other side of Steve and set my bag down on the ground.
"Ms. Romanoff, Ms. Carter. I'm sure you're wondering what you're doing here." Sharon nodded and I just looked at Steve, who nodded slightly. "Now, it's been brought to my attention," The dean sat back down, "That there's been an incident online."
"I-I'm not sure what you're referring to, sir," Sharon said innocently.
"Ms. Romanoff, may I?" The dean said, his face showing he saw right through Sharon's false innocence. His voice was dry, and sounded quite frankly like he was already done with her crap. I handed him my phone and he showed Sharon our message history.
"That's not... I was provoked, sir!"
"I've been sitting here with Mr. Rogers for quite some time, Ms. Carter, I know the full story. And Mr. Rogers has a good track record, I trust him. Quite frankly, you've had some incidents with students prior to these events, so I'll stick to Mr. Rogers's story." Sharon sighed and the dean continued, "Now, Mr. Rogers told me he's simply a witness. He has decided to leave the decision in the hands of Ms. Romanoff. Cyberbullying is not tolerated at this school, and frankly, physical bullying is a highly punishable offense."
"I never--"
"Throwing ranch at someone fits along those guidelines," The dean raised his eyebrows. Sharon was quieted and the dean turned to me. "Ms. Romanoff, if you find it appropriate for this situation, I can arrange a meeting with my superiors and see Ms. Sharon expelled from the school."
"I don't... that's not what I want," I said firmly. "I don't appreciate the way Sharon's been treating me."
"She blackmailed you," Steve spoke up.
"I..." I was at a loss for words and Steve turned to me in his seat.
"Do what you want. No one's pressuring you here, but you can't hold back," He said lowly. I nodded and looked at the dean.
"I think I would feel more comfortable if I knew Sharon wasn't able to interfere with my personal life. But I don't want to be the sole reason why her life takes that sudden turn, that's too much of a weight on my shoulders. I can't be the only reason Sharon's expelled."
"I can help you with that," The dean stood, walking over to one of his file cabinets. "We have here a collection of reported incidents that students have filed in the past. Ms. Carter's," he paused to sit back down, "is not extensive, but is notable. In the past, we've had two students reporting verbal abuse, and an anonymous report of you invading a student's personal space."
"What?" Sharon asked, sitting upright. "What was the anonymous report?"
"The student said you made unwanted advances, and it made her feel uncomfortable?"
"Her?" Asked Steve.
"Yes, the student was female."
Sharon gasped and put a hand to her mouth. She exhaled heavily and her eyes darted all around the room. Tears sprang to her eyes and she stood. "I'll be right ba... back." She shuddered, rushing out of the room. Steve and I followed her out and found her silently crying in the hallway.
"Sharon?" I asked gently.
She turned to face me, and she looked terrified. "You never understood. You thought you did, but you didn't. I didn't either, not until now." She looked at Steve and said shakily, "You know why I was always so interested in you?" Steve shook his head and Sharon continued, "Because Peggy was your best friend. And I... I didn't realize it then, but I would have done anything to be closer to Peggy. A-and," She sobbed. "I didn't understand what it was at the time but..."
"Sharon, what are you saying?" Steve asked seriously.
"Peggy was the one who filed the report, I know it. I know she must have done it," Sharon gasped for breath as the tears streaked down her face. "I loved her, Steve. I loved her with all my heart, and after she died, you were all I had left of her, so I... went crazy. But, back then, I didn't know what I was doing, I didn't understand my feelings, and I made her uncomfortable and she... Oh, my god, Steve, what did I do to her?"
"I had no idea. Sharon, I..."
"It's not your fault. It was me, it was all me," She collapsed against the wall, covering her face with her hands. I approached her and hugged her gently, letting her bury her face in my shoulder. "Natasha, I'm so-- I'm so sorry," Sharon whispered.
"You're okay," I soothed her best as I could.
She pulled away out of my grasp and shook her head, sniffling. "No, I can't stay here. Not now."
"What do you mean?" Steve asked.
"Everything reminds me of what I did. To you, to Peggy, to Steve. All because I couldn't admit to myself I was in love with her, and she didn't love me back. I don't think I can stay here. You can't talk me out of this," She said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Thank you, guys. I'm gonna go talk to the dean," She smiled sadly and went back inside, closing the door behind her.
I sighed and looked at the closed door. "I was cruel. I tried to send her away when she was just confused."
"No, you did the right thing. She's confused now, but it'll get better for her once she has a new start," Steve nodded confidently. "Come on, let's get our bags and go back to class." We entered the dean's office again where Sharon was wrapping up. I grabbed my backpack and leaned down, hugging Sharon sympathetically. She smiled shakily at me from her chair and Steve and I left, closing the door behind us. We walked slowly down the hall and he began to say, "I know it's really soon, but..."
I stopped him and pulled him down, laying a soft kiss on his lips. "Fine. One more date."
what a whirlwind amirite
