The next day I'm early to detention. 15 minutes early, to be precise.
Sara found out about me skipping not only one class, but until the end of school. She hasn't told dad but secretly grounded me by letting me have the joy of doing numerous chores, but then thought she wasn't being generous enough and decide to let the detention hall work its magic in torturing me.
Even though I'd have to go anyway.
Why didn't I see this coming?
So I'm early and this must be out of character for me, because Ms. Martinez - my smelly Spanish teacher who happened to spill coffee down me the other day, and the person who keeps an eye on everyone during detention - is eyeing me like I'm something disgusting she's been asked to ingest. I smile at her, and she looks away.
It's only minutes later she arrives at my table carrying a pile of books and worksheets.
"The work you missed out on yesterday." she states, dropping the books on my table and smiling as she walks off.
I sigh and take the Pre-calc. workbook from the pile and a textbook and a blue pen from my bag which I stole from Michael this morning.
Michael is my brother, by the way. No one special. Just the most popular guy in school, captain of the football team and happens to be in practically every girl's diary. I know this because Jessy happens to be one of them. And trust me, slutty or not, she's hard to impress.
Anyway, thankfully, none of the other students sit at my table, so I can spread out.
I begin the work I missed out on. I get bored very quickly as it is way too easy. Maths is easy full stop.
"We meet again," whispers a smooth male voice out of nowhere.
I look up to see a brown set of eyes and a smile that makes my stomach do front flips.
"Hey," I say, smiling widely up at Jason.
"Have fun yesterday?" he asks, casually dropping his bag on a chair and pulling out the one beside it. He sits down, his eyes never leaving mine.
I ponder for a moment. "Does having the absolute honour of doing the laundry, hoovering, mopping and scrubbing every corner of the house and doing the washing up sound like fun to you?"
"Touché." Jason says, laughing.
I laugh too, but not so loud so Ms. Martinez doesn't chop my head off.
"Was it worth it though?" he asks, biting his bottom lip.
I find this attractive, but try not to stare at his lips for too long... I think. Knowing me, the staring probably isn't as casual as it feels.
After God knows how long I reply, "Yes," Smiling. "definitely."
"Good," he says, smiling too.
"Are you grounded?" I ask.
Jason shrugs. "They didn't find out."
"Ugh, lucky."
Ms. Martinez stands over the table and stares down at us both. She drops the same amount of books as me beside Jason before looking from him to me, then hissing, "Be quiet!" and walking back to her desk.
As I sit in the detention room, I begin to feel a bit uncomfortable being with Jason. I look around. No cheerleaders, no Alexa. Cool. Just the jocks. Oh and nerds who decide to come here in their free period. OK.
I didn't realise Jason was talking until I look at him again.
"...because I was the one who came up with the idea and everything, so it's practically my fault we're here,"
