Mary opened her small curtains to reveal the beautiful sunshine. She had been waiting for this day since her dad took her out of orphanage 5 years ago. Since then, life had been horrible, living with her stepmother and unbelievably, nasty stepsisters as her father had remarried so he can go to cambridge to continue his studies of law. Mary always had sudden flashbacks of her mother, who she only got to live with for 8 short years. Sophie had loved Mary more than anything in the world and cared for her more than she did for herself, everything went smoothly between her parents until her dad decided to go overseas after being scholarship to the worlds largest university and her mum started working in a restaurant to keep-up with the house budget. After a few days of working at La Ciba, Mary got used to her mother leaving at 5pm and coming back at 7 in the morning but one day Sophie did not come back the next morning, at first Mary thought she was running late but after taking her 3 year old sister to childcare and going to school herself, her mother did not come to pick them up so Mary took her mothers responsibility of looking after Rose and they both went home and waited for their mother to come for 3 whole days until there was a knock on the door, at first Mary and Rose were excited but when they opened the door an old man that they immediately recognised as the rent man demanded for the weekly rent that was due 3 days ago, Mary didn't know what to do so she told the truth about her mother not coming back home. The man took them to orphanage even though she tried to explain that she had a father. Rose was adopted in a few days because she was young and could be easily moulded into a new lifestyle but however Mary stayed there for 1 year until her dad finally came and picked her up. Her father remarried that very evening so he had no responsibility of his daughter, expecting his new wife to look after Mary and went back to US that very night. At first Mary was relieved to be with ‘family’ again but life was not so easy.

 

Amanda sent her two twin daughters- Rachel and Shelly to go and choose their rooms and at last gave Mary the opportunity to set her things in the leftover space in the house At first Mary thought it was only because they didn’t know her well but as days went on, her new family continued excluding her from the house activities and treating her harshly.

 

Mary sat down on the couch after opening the curtains, the days she had at orphanage were better than here, she would have rather stayed there with a bunch of strangers than living with Amanda. “That's it” she stood up and said to herself, “I have had enough” she stomped down the stairs and went to yell at her stepmother who was watching t.v. “Amanda, I want to go to school like Rachel and Shelly. Enroll me NOW” she demanded. Amanda paused the t.v show she was watching and barked at Mary “ Who do you think you are, I am NOT spending or I should say wasting a single cent on you. Understand?”

“Fine, its not your money anyways, its MY fathers but still. FINE. I will get my own right no matter what you say” she then walked away into her room to start making plans.
