The next day I still felt a little out of sorts like my body was a few sizes too small, but after meeting up with the girls for brunch and getting some food in me I felt a lot better.
"Guys, does anyone know what was up with last night?" Becca asked around her mouthful of cinnamon roll.
"I tried looking up information about the town through the library's website, but there aren't any books or articles written about its history." I sighed, cutting into my chocolate crepe with a frown.
"I think we should ask Tony to look through the paper's archives." Dawn pointed her fork at Candice, "Don't think I don't know about you holing yourself up in the old stacks to avoid fixing my computer."
Candice laughed, "I'm sorry I get tired of fixing all the weird things you do to 'get rid of all the unnecessary stuff'."
I smiled at Dawn teasingly, "I'm pretty sure network drivers aren't wasted space on your computer."
"I didn't know that the computer needed them to connect to wifi!" Dawn exclaimed, huffing and crossing her arms.
I noticed Becca was looking at the table blankly.
"Hey, Becca." I kicked her under the table to get her attention, but she didn't even flinch, "Becca!"
"What?" Becca suddenly turned to me, looking like she had just woken up.
"You were staring into space, are you okay?" I asked, concerned at her expression.
Dawn and Candice shared a look with me then turned back to Becca.
"I'm totally fine, I was just daydreaming." She looked confused.
Candice chuckled, "Isn't it Daisy's job to daydream?"
I giggled at the hypocrisy of Candice insinuating I was always spacing out when she was the one who I found sleeping on the job just last Friday. I was about to tease Candice when I heard an unfamiliar voice behind me.
"Do you not get enough sleep?"
I turned around abruptly, but there was only a wall behind me.
"Did you guys say something?" I asked everyone, but they just shook their heads.
"It's not them, Darling."
I scanned the restaurant for anyone who might own the voice that just spoke to me and felt around the table for hidden speakers, "Is this a prank?"
"This isn't a prank."
"What are you talking about, Daisy?" Becca asked me with concern painted across her face.I realized I was genuinely freaking the girls out, which meant they weren't involved.
