Lydia Richards is an Arizona native. Going into Preschool, the blonde haired blue eyed girl had met young Alex Matthews, and the girls had bonded over their favorite colors being yellow. The girls were attached at the hip from that moment on.
The girls frequented each other's homes, leading Ema and Brian to view Lydia as one of their own. Unlike her best friend, Lydia got along with Auston very well in their younger years, and she always encouraged him to chase his dream of playing professional hockey.
As Auston was making his way up in the Junior leagues, Alex and Lydia attended the University of Arizona. Lydia choosing to major in physical therapy while Alex chose to head into finance. When Auston was drafted into the NHL, the girls sat on the couch of their shared apartment in Tucson, held each other, and cried as they watched their boy accomplish his dream.
Lydia did not have the home life that the Matthews did. Her family was affluent, but her parents were far from in love. As she reached high school, her parents divorced. Her mother chose to court other wealthy men while her father took her to dinner with a new girlfriend every month, usually the girlfriend being younger than herself. Basically, Lydia relied on Ema and Brian for advice and the actual parenting while the Richards just put money in her account every month.
