Help! Somebody help me! The voice desperately echoed inside Addison's head. Oh no, not again she thought to herself, this isn't real, this isn't real she chanted as she furiously massaged her temples.
"You ok Addy?"asked Sandra as she walked to the front desk from one of the examination rooms.
Dropping her hands from her head Addison forced a smile as she faced her coworker, "Just a headache."
"You seem to be getting a lot of those lately?"
It was true she had been getting a lot of headaches lately but what Sandra didn't know was that they always came with a voice speaking in her head. Yep she was officially going crazy. It's not like she could say something like oh it's fine once the voice stops talking the pain goes away. Yea that totally didn't make her sound like a crazy person.
"It's fine." Addy answered "I'm fine."she stated more firmly as if trying to convince herself.
Someone please help me! No I don't want to be in here! The voice pleaded getting louder. Addy could see flashes of a cage and what seemed like a view from a moving car. This was something new for her and she could feel the fear flood her body. She first started hearing the voice couple days after her 21st birthday and it was getting worse as the weeks passed. She has been trying to ignore it but that didn't seem to do any good.
"Are you sure you're okay?"
Addison opened her eyes which she hadn't even realized she had shut to see Sandra's concerned face in front of her. She took a deep breath and tried to not show any outward sign that she was shaking inside. Her body was buzzing with energy to help the voice.
"I guess I just didn't sleep well last night, with exams coming up I've been studying later then usual." This wasn't a total lie, she did have trouble sleeping but it was more from stressing out that she was having a nervous break down. Hearing voices, hello who wouldn't freak out, right?
"Well we only have about half hour before closing so if you want you can take off. I'm sure I can handle if we have anyone else walk in today which is very unlikely." Offered Sandra.
Addy hesitated she didn't want to leave Sandra in case there was an emergency but it was taking her all her strength to keep her body still as it was buzzing for her to find the person who was calling for help.
"If you're sure."
Sandra nodded in confirmation. Addison was just turning to go in the back and grab her purse when the door opened and the local sheriff walked in.
"I could use some help doc." he called out holding the door open. They all rushed outside and walked to the cruiser parked by the front entrance.
"We broke up a dog fighting ring today just a little outside of town. We got more the fifteen dogs but these three are the most injured." Dale was explaining as they unloaded the cages.
The first cage contained a German Shepard with minor injuries same as the Pitt Bull in the second cage. The third cage contained what looked like a pup but all she could see was a black mass of growling fur. She could see that the pup was badly injured and was bleeding profusely. Addy hesitated opening the door trying to figure out the best way to help the pup and hopefully not get bitten.
"We found this one unconscious and I didn't think he was even going to make it this far but he woke up half way and hasn't stopped growling since. It looked like he was beaten with a pipe, poor thing but I guess he's not giving up." Explained Dale as they all circled around the cage.
"We might have to tranquilize him before we look at his injuries." Sandra suggested.
Don't touch me! Don't come near me! The voice echoed in Addy's head. Oh not now she thought I need to focus I don't want to loose this pup. She didn't know why but she felt an immediate connection with this pup her protective instinct was kicking into overdrive and all she wanted to do was hunt down the people who hurt him and kill them herself. She had never felt this way before, she could practically taste her hatred for the animals who would beat on someone weaker than them. As Sandra went to get a tranq gun Addison leaned into the cage and whispered,"Don't be scared little one we won't hurt you. We want to help you and fix you up and you'll feel better in no time."
