In between

He died. Again. Now he sat in between the worlds, with a griffin sitting before him. The creature looked flustered.

"Master, where are we?" It asked with a frown on its face. The last thing it remembered is being killed along its master.

"Nowhere, somewhere. I'm not sure, what to call this place - though I am familiar with it. Too familiar, for my liking," The last part he muttered into the void, with sorrow seeping through his voice. "Do not worry, we're just going to the next world."

"Next world? Reincarnation, you say?" The griffin looked around. There was nothing apart from its master. The men had clear eyes, graceful features and powerful build. From his form flowed power. Yet the creature could vividly imagine its master's final moments. Covered in blood, forced to the ground, stripped from his dignity. Guilt washed over it. "Master, I'm sorry. I couldn't save you,"

"It's not your fault. Nothing could save me. And I'm glad that you're here, so don't be sad," its master said with a smile.

"But if I was stronger, you wouldn't die. You wouldn't suffer," griffin said with very clear regret. It knew it wasn't the strongest of beasts, and accepted that fact. Yet, right now it wished to be stronger. To protect its master.

"Maybe. But still, you shouldn't blame yourself. You'll get a chance to save me in the next life"

"What if I'll again be too weak to protect you, master?"

"Than you need to train. Even here I can cultivate, so I guess you can too. You can train till you know there's no stronger than you. At least with that idea in mind. Because soon we will  be reborn,"

"Yes, master!" It had a goal - never let its master suffer again. And to fulfil it, it would train "How much time do we have?"

"There's no time in here. Infinity, but not even a second at once. I don't know, but no matter how long it is, we can train," Its master said closing his eyes. He sat cross-legged, ready to meditate.

"Then, I shall start now," The creature stated firmly and also began its training.

...

They had both spend what seemed like eternity in there. They used their time well, not wasting even a moment. The men meditated and gathered his energy. The energy in the void was different from the normal one. It was pure and easier to refine. He could almost straight away convert it into his own and circulate around his astral form. Then he used that energy while training his body in martial art techniques. Here he wasn't neither blind or deaf, so it was simpler to learn. He also started to think about some cultivation techniques, like purifying ones body and mind or setting his body in flaming Qi. He knew he made a lot of progress since he broke through three levels:

From green to turquoise,

from turquoise to blue

and from blue to purple.

Purple was thought about as a peak of mortals ability, and a place where you age so slowly, you're almost immortal - at least in his previous world. In the world before it, there was something beyond purple. Silver, gold, white - the last one being a legend. But not impossible. So this is where he was right now heading. Maybe it didn't seem like a lot, but it was said that getting from purple to silver would take 500 years in the least. And that's only if you could cultivate non stop, with the purest energy possible.

The men sighed. Long way before him...

...

When they felt the force of the vortex, both looked completely different from when they entered the void. The griffin was six times bigger than before, its wings were more powerful and feathers combined with fur more shinier. It would be considered a celestial beast in its previous world.
