Jack stared at the same page of the same book for what seemed like hours. He ran his fingers through his hair, pulling at the ends and slamming his fist back down on the table, defeated.
"Tough read?" I asked, sitting down at the table in the middle of the bunker.
He didn't even lift his head. "No matter how many times I try to read this, it doesn't make any sense." He sounded distraught.
"Jack, look at me," I said. I reached across the table to pull the book away. He held on, but when he found I wasn't going to give in, he let go and raised his eyes to meet mine. "Maybe it's time to take a break."
"A break?"
"Yeah," I said. "You know, do something else for a while."
He nodded slowly. I shut the book slowly. Jack stared down at the table for a few seconds before looking back up at me.
"What do I do now?" He asked.
"Well," I said, "whatever you want to, really."
"What do you do when you take a break?" He asked so innocently, a hint of confusion making its way into his voice. I couldn't help but laugh a little.
"Dean goes on a drive, and Sam goes on runs."
He shook his head. "Y/N, what do you do?"
I smiled slightly, lifting my eyes to his, brilliant blue in the dim light from the library. "How about I show you?"
His eyes lit up and he nodded furiously. I told him to go grab a coat and I went up to my room to do the same. I decided on an old black sweatshirt with a red plaid shirt layered over it. I made my way back down the table, where the nephilim was standing eagerly and waiting.
Once we were out of the doors, Jack began to ask questions. "Where are we going?" He asked. "What are we doing? Do you do this often? What's that over there?"
"You'll see," I smiled. "I do this anytime I'm overwhelmed. And that - that's a squirrel."
He nodded fervently. After about ten minutes of walking, we came to a field of grass that turned into a hill, surrounded by trees. The crickets chirped loudly. This was the only spot around the bunker that I'd found peaceful. No street noise, no research, no worrying about Sam or Dean walking in on me while I was trying to take a break from everything. Just utter calm. We didn't get that much.
I stopped walking and sat down in the grass, staring up at the full moon in the sky. Jack followed suit.
"What now?" he whispered.
"Now," I said, "you just stay here. Enjoy it. I like to look at the stars." I reached my left hand up and pointed around the sky, naming off a few of the constellations I could remember the names of. I stopped when something grabbed my hand. Jack.
Jack was holding my hand and looking at me. I stared back, shocked and unsure of how to respond. His skin was warm, his touch comforting in ways I didn't know I needed.
"I like it when you talk to me," he said gently. "You get really happy when you talk about things you like."
I shrugged awkwardly. Jack leaned around to lift my eyes back to his. He moved to sit closer to me and I tensed up. He noticed and moved back away, letting go of my hand and his face dropping.
"No, Jack - Jack, that's not - you didn't do anything wrong," I blurted out. I laid back on the grass, feeling defeated. "It's just that, with our job, the way we live... nobody has touched me in a long time. I didn't know what to do. I'm sorry," I forced out. My eyes were shut tight.
I felt Jack's hand on my shoulder, then his forehead next to my cheek as he laid down on my chest. "Is this okay?" He asked. I nodded.
"It's more than okay."
I held him tightly as he drifted off into gentle slumber. He didn't sleep much, but when he did, it was easy to see the stress and worry slip off his face. Such a peaceful creature. It was so strange knowing that someone so young contained so much power and yet, here he was, asleep on my shoulder.
I don't know how long we stayed there, but I knew we had to start heading home when the birds began to chirp their morning tune. I woke Jack up gently.
"It's almost morning," I whispered to him. "Ready to head back?"
Jack rubbed the sleep from his eyes and looked around, then bolted up and headed straight for the bunker.
"Jack, wait!" I called after him. He didn't slow his pace.
"I think I've got it, Y/N! I think I figured it out! I just have to get back and read it again to be sure!"
I ran after him, into the bunker and down the steps to where we'd left the book the night before. Ripping it open, he searched frantically for a page and then sat down to read with newfound energy.
"That's it!" He cried out. "I found it. I found the warding Dean asked for!" He jumped out of his seat and gripped me in a tight hug, picking me up and spinning me around. He set me down and then looked deep into my eyes. "I have to go tell Dean." He said, smiling from ear to ear. I nodded and found my way up to my room, ready to get some much-needed rest.
