Prologue

I was five years old when my mama told me we were getting new neighbors. She told me that they had a boy my age, and that he would need a friend. She put me in my best white shirt and pink pants. Mama had put my hair in pigtails and had stopped me before I had rolled in the grass. It took five minutes to get to the Cadence's house. We were at the top of the street - they were at the bottom. I can remember a huge moving truck in front of the house I would later call the blue house. Though the house itself wasn't blue, the front door was.

When Mama knocked on the door, a lady with blonde hair answered it. The lady smiled at us. "You must be the Chances. You called me yesterday, right?"

And Mama and Mrs. Cadence immediately started talking. Mrs. Cadence introduced us to her husband, but said her little boy was just taking a nap. As the adults talked, I fidgeted. I wanted to go outside and play, but I knew Mama would tell me not to.

It was around dinner time when we were finally going to leave. As Mama opened the door, a little boy's voice said, "Mommy, who is that pretty girl?"

His name was Will Cadence, and he was the cutest boy I ever saw - even at five years old. He had dimples and they made me smile at him. I never forgot his smile when he beamed back.

The next day, Mama took me back over to the Cadence's house. The little boy threw open the door, and when he saw he, he jumped up and down. "Mommy, it's the girl! I told you she'd come back!"

Will Cadence became my best friend that day. We spent every day together—we were joined at the hip and did everything together.

We stayed that way till Will turned twelve. He loved to perform shows for us—and his mama thought he was talented. She took Will out to an audition. And it was the last time I saw him. People think I forgot about him, but really, I think about him a lot. He became really famous with acting, and for five years, that's all he did. I never once got a call or a letter or anything. It was as though Will Cadence had forgotten his best friend.

But it didn't matter to me. I remember him.
