Chapter 1
Pacing up and down the corridor, Zoe impatiently bit her finger nails. It had been almost three months since her last employer Mrs.Foster died and to Zoe’s knowledge that was supposed to be the last time she was to hear from the old lady.
Although herself and Mrs.Foster weren’t exactly close, they held a mutual understanding; ok that was an understatement, the old woman hated her. In the two years Zoe had taken on the position of Mrs.Fosters carer, the old lady had been nothing but rude and demanding; she had made Zoe’s work life a nightmare.
Of course Zoe always ‘had the option to leave’ as Mrs.Foster so often suggested, but due to financial reasons Zoe was forced stay and endure Mrs. Foster’s oh so charming disposition. Pity was also heavily apart of the reason that Zoe did not leave, in the two years she had been working for Mrs.Foster, the woman had hardly had any visitors. She was so lonely Zoe thought. The old lady had lost her husband about twenty years before and she never mentioned anything about kids, so Zoe assumed she had none. It all seemed so sad; the woman had spent her dying days without the comfort of any loved ones, leaving only Zoe to console her until she passed away.
Reeling away from the unpleasant memories of the past, Zoe took a deep breath and continued to pace the corridor. She could not understand what was so important that she had to practically run all the way from her shabby flat in Holland Park to Mrs.Fosters solicitors in Mayfair. The phone call from Mr.Teddington, Mrs.Forsters solicitor had been brief, unexpected and had left Zoe in a state of shock. All throughout her journey to the solicitor’s office, Zoe played out countless situations of why she was so unexpectedly needed at the reading of Mrs.Fosters will. Surely Mrs.Foster had not left her anything, the woman hated her, or a least Zoe thought she did.
Frustrated at herself for being so nervous, Zoe finally stopped her pacing and sat down. She waited another five minutes before Mr.Teddingtons pretty young secretary came in and lead her into his office. As Zoe walked in, her eyes immediately surveyed the elegant looking office. The far left side wall was filled will three large bookshelves, the back wall behind Mr.Teddingtons desk was taken up by floor to ceiling windows and the right wall had countless certificates hanging from it and a dainty side sofa pushed against it. Letting her eyes linger on the certificates, Zoe almost forgot that Mr.Teddington was occupying the chair behind the huge desk.
‘Please Miss.Walker, take a seat’, Mr.Teddington spoke, startling Zoe out of her inner thoughts. As Zoe turned she saw a middle aged handsome man, dressed in a simple black suit, hair immaculately styled and a face that was clean shaven. Knowing that she could stall no longer, Zoe carefully made her way to the seat Mr.Teddington was gesturing towards. When she was comfortably seated, Mr.Teddington continued to speak ‘Right Miss.Walker I’m sure you understand why you are here’
‘Actually I don’t’ Zoe simply replied. At Zoe’s response Mr.Teddington scrunched up his eyebrows and looked at Zoe in confusion ‘But surely you know that you are hear today to listen to Mrs.Fosters last will in testament’.
‘Yes I know that’ Zoe nervously replied, ‘but what I don’t understand is why I have to listen to it. Mrs.Foster would never leave something for me in her will…quite honestly the woman despised me’. Mr.Teddingtons face scrunched up even more in confusion at Zoe’s last words. Taking a brief moment to compose himself, Mr.Teddington cleared his throat and slowly leaned back in his chair.
