We made it to the next sunrise. I sit in the gloom and watch the sun edge it's way over the trees. Such a normal thing to do. I look back in the room at the two bumps under the covers. I will let them sleep, they've earned it. We are safe for now. Away from the city almost out of the suburbs. If we are careful and quiet we may be able to rest for a few days.
I always joked about what I'd do if it ever happened. I'd be prepared, bug out bag in hand with a safe place to go. I would have weapons and know how to use them. But I was complacent. Who would have ever though it would actually happen? But it did. Zombies walk the earth.
