Prompt:
The rope was tight, biting cruelly into my arms and chest. The water around was dark and murky, like melted midnight. The water flowed gently around my face, cold and slow.
I couldn't take it any more. Beginning to writhe and struggle, I tried to scream, but viscous water muffled my strangled yells. Bubbles streamed from my mouth. Giving up, I took a deep breath, like I knew they wanted me to.
The foul water seeped into my lungs. I could feel it gushing slowly down my throat and shuddered. Are you happy now? I wondered dimly. My body began to compute the appearance of water in my lungs, and after a few shuddery breaths, it had made the painful transition and I was breathing as normally as I could.
Scientists in white lab coats began to scribble words into books, onto clipboards, on spare pieces of paper. Timers stopped, machines beeped, and I watched helplessly from the tank, unable to do anything.
Eventually the rope tying me down pulled taut, and I was hauled out of the grim water, once again making the transition back to air. The guards seized my old shirt and pulled me onto the dirty platform. I saw, far away, the white blurs milling around far beneath me.
The men ripped various black machines from my skin, leaving painful red welts. I winced but made no oral reaction, knowing I would only be punished for 'causing trouble'.
A metal collar was forced round my neck and tugged. The constriction made me choke and lurch forward, coughing. The guards glared at me. I quickly followed them, throat aching.
Past me, I saw a girl stumble, forced to the ground. Her hands and neck were bound with plastic bonds, and her eyes were alight with rage and pain, I nodded at her as we passed. "Don't," I breathed. "It'll make it worse."
The girl looked up in my direction. Her mouth set. Then she was dragged on by her neck, scrambling to keep up with the plastic collar.
I watched her go, wishing they would be done with us and our abilities. Freaks like us were kept like animals and I hated it. But all I could do was be dragged into an endless cycle of tests and experiments.
And water. Lots and lots of water.
