Olivia

Four thirty in the morning is not an ideal time to wake up, but when you have no job and are working through a temp agency that pays everyday you kind of have to.
Walking into the temp building with my best friend, Jennifer, and my twin Julie, the receptionist, Danielle, looks up from her computer at us. "Good morning ladies." She greets too cheerily for the time. "Morning." We all groan out. Dani laughs. "Have a job for you ladies. Are you willing to work outside today?" She asks looking at a paper. "At this point, I'll take anything you can throw at me." I respond with a little giggle.
"Ok. Let me print this ticket, Jennifer do you have a license?" She asks Jenny. "Yea." She answers showing her her license. "I'm gonna have you drive the van today." She explains. Jennifer nods as I take a seat in an empty chair.
After twenty or so minutes Danielle hands Jennifer the ticket and we round everybody up. "Alright. Let's go." Jennifer speaks to a group of guys and one other female. They stand and follow as we walk outside.
Hoping into the van behind the drivers seat. "Guys it is to early for you to be this loud." I speak to everybody irritated. By now we were on the interstate following a Ford truck to the job site. Another ten minutes passes and I fall asleep resting my head on the window.
I awoke five minutes before arriving at the site on the side of the road. Climbing out of the van I walk with Jennifer and Julie to figure out what to do. "Where's Jesse?" Jennifer asks herself. I shrug looking around for someone who looks like the boss. Ryan, the guy I was sitting beside taps Jennifer on the shoulder and points to someone who looks to be going bald. "That is the supervisor." He states and walks off.
I am handed a white suit to put on over my clothes. We will be working in a creekbank to clean up after a terrible storm. "You might want to put on some other shoes, those are going to get really muddy." One of the guys running the job today says to Julie, Jennifer, and I. We look down at our shoes then down to the side to see alot of mud. "Yea. Here put some of these boots on." Another person agreed showing us where to get a pair of mud boots.
Walking to the other side of the black trailer that was beside us, a man throws out some boots for a few people. Jennifer steps into the trailer as Ryan steps out. She pulls boot by boot up to look at the sizes and could not find the right size for each of us. "You might have to wear a size a little big, we don't have any smaller than a ten." A man with shabby red hair commented towards us. I hear alot of agreements from the other workers. "We don't usually get a lot of girls out here." He added as we continued to search for the smallest sized boots they had.
There's a shout from the back of the trailer and Jesse calling out to everyone to huddle in a circle. "Alright. We're gonna have a good day, It's going to be hot, and we will be done by the end of the week." He exclaims to everybody. There are a few cheers that come from behind me, I turn around to see who is cheering and it's the shabby haired guy again.
I giggle smiling at him. From this angle he's kind of cute. I quickly turn my head back to in front of me and see everybody dispersing down to the creek and some still looking for, or putting on, their boots. I groan and go back to looking.
Giving up I pick up a matching pair of mud boots, slide into them, noticing a very alarming amount of space, and start walking with the rest of the group. Almost losing my shoe in the process.
Arriving at the top of the creek we stand around a group of people placing a ladder to line down the creek. "We're all going down there?" I ask feeling the fear settle in my chest. "Well you can slide." Someone suggested laughing. I look over the side of the creek and almost slip gripping the tree beside me. Turning to Jennifer and Julie shaking my head, "Nope, not going down there." I tell them quickly.
Jesse walks up to us holding a roll of industrial trashbags. "If you ladies will follow Sean down that way there is some trash to pick up." He tells us handing Julie the roll of trashbags.
Sean is a bald man with a dragon tattoo on the side of his head. We walked towards the end of the creek. Cars fly by on the bridge above us.
I bend down to grab trash from the ground as Jennifer and Julie walk on a ladder to get down into the creek and pick up trash.
After twenty or so minutes of picking up muddy trash, I found a kids toothbrush stuck in the mud, we went back towards the front where everybody was still picking trash up.
At lunch they fed us subway, not a big favorite of mine, but I will eat it when that's all there is. Biting into my sandwich, after taking a seat in the van, Julie starts talking about her boyfriend, Darian. I roll my eyes at her, she is forever talking about how long he waits to text when he's at work, or how he's always cancelling plans with her because his baby mama is a bitch.
I tune her out most of the time. "Are you listening to me?" She asks in the middle of her spiel. "No, it's the same damn thing everyday. He's at work, can't be on his phone the whole time or he would be fired. Get over it. I have no boyfriend." I state starting to get pissed off at her.
She rolls her eyes and focuses on talking to Jennifer. I sigh relieved she's done talking to me. Hopping out of the van again I throw my left over trash in the bin next to me and sit, playing on my phone until it is time to go back.
Going back to work I grab a trashbag and start filling it with things from the ground. I grab what I can see and soon I am done. I look around as if I were working but do not see anything. Walking around Julie, beside Jennifer I grab what looks like a dirty diaper. "Ew what the fuck?" I exclaim throwing it at Julie. "Ew." She says pushing it to the bottom of the trashbag in her hand. I laugh at her gaining a few stares. Jesse comes up from behind me. "Hey ladies. Would one of you mind going to my truck and grabbing a pair of gloves. They should be on the passenger side of the windshield." I jump grabbing my chest where my heart is. "God you scared me." I grumble trying to slow my racing heart. They both laugh at me.
"Whatever, I'll go get the gloves." I state starting the trek back up the hill. Arriving at the muddy white truck I open the passenger door and grab the gloves. Turning I notice someone is walking up the hill, as I get closer I notice it's Julie. "What are you doing?" I ask her as I go to pass her but she stops me. "He wants us to get trashbags from the trailer." I groan. I was already half way back, now I have to turn around? I roll my eyes and turn around following her back up the hill.
Climbing into the cramped trailer, we dig through the shelves and piles of shoes until I turn and see a box full of rolls of industrial sized trashbags. "Oh jeez." I groan trying to pull the box up. "Here, get out and I'll push it to you." Julie sighs pointing outside the trailer. I jump out and watch Julie as she slides the box over to me. Grabbing the sides I pull it to me so Julie can jump out.
She steps one foot down on the ground before following with the other foot. I roll my eyes shaking my head. 'Whatever.'I think to myself as we walk side by side back to where everyone is. For the next fifteen minutes we're told to go back and forth between the trailer and the creek. "Why don't they just tell us to get everything at the same time?" Julie asks as we carry a cooler full of water bottles back to the creek. "Who fucking knows." I growl out pissed, I had the beginning of blisters on my heels and ankles, I hate going back and forth doing anything, especially carrying things. It's hot and I'm not used to this.
Setting the cooler down beside the filled trashbags we look at Jesse for anything else to get from the trailer. "That'll be it girls. Continue picking trash up." He states turning to Bryan, the higher boss or whatever you want to call him. He seems like a dick to me though. I shrug, catching my breath and picking up an empty bag to put trash in.
Thirty minutes go by before Jesse calls out to everybody to go on our last break. I grab a water and sit on a big rock. It looks like a boulder but way smaller. Julie and Jennifer are standing beside me when Jesse and another man, I haven't met, walks up to us. "Ladies, this is Silas. He has a job for you guys and the other woman that's here today." Jesse explains before walking off. "So what are we gonna be doing?" I ask curious. "Jesse wants us to clean out the trailer, straighten it up a little bit so it's easier for everyone to get in and out." He explains to us.
"You know, that would've helped when Julie and I were going back and forth between the trailer and creek about an hour ago." I say, turning my head and rolling my eyes. He laughs and sits on the rock across from me. Five minutes later and everybody is starting the trek back to the creek except Julie, Jennifer, the older woman and myself. We stay behind and wait for silas' instruction.
"Alright ladies. If you will start by taking these boxes out first and straightening the bags, and gloves, I'll start straightening the shelves." He instructs jumping into the trailer. I grab and pull a box towards me making a noise as I try to pick it up. "This is heavy." I mutter to myself. Julie comes up and helps me pick the box up and place it on the ground. I pick black bag after black bag up and fold them into a pile. When we are done with that we look into the trailer and notice the floor looks mostly clean.
Silas has me take a shovel to pick dirt off the floor after misty sweeps it into a pile. Jennifer and Anastasia, I finally got to ask her her name, were putting trash bags back in boxes and silas put the extra mud boots on the floor infront of the shelves
Once everything needed to be done was done we went back to Jesse at the creek. For another twenty or so minutes we pick trash up. When we finish for the day we head back up to the trucks and van.
I climb into the van and wait for everybody. Anastasia is already in the van when I pull my phone out of my pocket to look at notifications and play my game.
Five or ten minutes later I look up and see the red headed man from this morning walking over to the van. "Hey, Olivia right?" He asks. Confused I look at him for a minute before answering with a 'yea?' Anastasia starts giggling and mumbling to herself and he looks at her. He sighs before looking back at me. "I'll be right back." He states walking off.
Sitting there confused I look at Anastasia to see if she knew who he was. She just shrugged her shoulders as Jake, the other guy besides Ryan, that road with us, climbs in. "What's up?" He greets sitting in the seat behind me. "Nothing." I reply going back to my game.
Five minutes later Julie and Jennifer hop into the front seats, Jennifer driving again. The man comes running back to the van and shoves a piece of paper at me. "If you get bored, text me." He states running off to his truck. Everyone is looking at me like 'what the hell just happened?' I turn the paper over and see a number, it takes me a minute to see his name at the top corner above his number. 'Blake.' "What he give you?" Julie asks with an amused look on her face. "His phone number." I respond smiling and shaking my head.
Jennifer follows Jesse, in his truck to get back to the interstate to go home. We stop at the same gas station we did this morning and I stay in the van not having any money to buy anything. Jake buys Julie and I a Pepsi unexpectedly. "Thanks." I say opening my Pepsi and drinking some. After a few minutes we are on the interstate and I am falling asleep again in the van.
