Prologue
*Giuliana's POV*
The annoying sound of my alarm clock woke me up. I pressed the snooze button and glanced at the time. '5:45am' it read. Ugh...I thought. Why can't it just be Friday?? Friday was the day me and my parents were going to Chicago to visit my aunt and uncle. It's only for the weekend, but i don't care. Anything to get out of this hellhole of a city is fun to me. I got up and got dressed. Today i was wearing my neon pink soccer tee shirt, black and pink yoga pants, and tan moccasins. I straightened my hair and clipped back my bangs. I added a little bit of foundation and mascara and went downstairs. My mother greeted me in the kitchen with a plate topped with eggs and a little bowl of fruit salad. I grabbed it and sat at the island. I took my iPhone out of my pocket and checked my Twitter. I had a lot of followers, and i get a billion tweets everyday it drives me crazy! Funny thing is, I'm a nobody. When i first meet someone, they think I'm a rich popular snob...but I'm almost the polar opposite. I'm rich, but i am not popular. I'm not much of a people person. I have a few friends at school, and i have gotten "invites" from the popular girls at school, but i know that they are bad influences and i wasn't just gonna leave my "nobody friends" for the populars...i'm better than that...i think. I finished eating and got ready to leave for school. My mom drives me to school everyday, so she went out to start the car early, since it was cold out. My dad has been long gone. He works at 5:00am so he leaves way before i get up. I grabbed my bag and phone and went outside. My mom was impatiently waiting for me. "I didn't take that long, mom." I said annoyed. She has a high temper and it's annoying.
"Well, i just dont want you to be late." She said as she was backing up out of our driveway. We live five minutes away from school, but my mom thinks it's too dangerous to walk. Once we pull up to my school, i ignore my mom saying goodbye and slam the door. This is basically our morning routine. I actually feel sad about it because me and my mom used to get along so well, and i told her everything. But that was middle school. Now i'm a senior in high school, and in just a short month, i'll officially be an adult!
"Hey, Gi, over here!" My friend, Keri, said. She was with another girl, Janice. Janice was the new girl, so Keri took her under her wing.
"Hey, Keri...Janice." I said a bit coldly.
"What's your deal?" Janice asked. She obviously doesn't know me enough...thankfully.
"Nothing. Let's go. I'm freezing." I said changing the subject. We went in the school and I turned down a different hall to get to my locker. They said bye but I just waved. I was the only one in the hallway, and the first one in my homeroom. I was really early; Mr. Wilson wasn't even there yet. Once the bell rang, everyone sat down and Mr. Wilson came in, seeming grumpy as ever. Great.
*After School*
The bell rang, and I ran out of the door and to my locker. I decided to walk home so I texted my mom and told her not to come. She didn't like the idea of me walking home, but I didn't care. I remember i had twenty bucks in my backpack so i walked to Starbucks and got my favorite, Caramel Frappe with extra caramel. I drank it quickly and left. It took about ten minutes until i was walking up my driveway. I opened the door, and my mom was frantically running around, tears streaming down her face. "Mom?" She stopped and looked at me. She looked really tired and a little sick.
"Oh, hi Guilz, how was school?" She said quickly wiping away a tear on her cheek.
"What's wrong mom?" I asked ignoring her question.
"It's your uncle..." She said slowly.
"What about him?"
"He is very ill, and we need to go to Chicago right now."
