Polar had never seen a RainWing cry before.

They were supposed to be these carefree, happy, simple dragons who no matter how hard you tried would never find anything wrong with anything and everything was sunshine and rainbows. At least, that's what he thought.

He never even knew that a RainWing could feel any emotions other than happy, sleepy and hungry.

Polar had been at Jade Mountain Academy for a few months now. His clawmates were tolerable at best. He shared a room with Jasper the SkyWing and Lemur the RainWing.

Jasper mostly kept to himself, which Polar could appreciate, and mostly hung out with Seaweed and Fen, the SeaWing and MudWing. Lemur was a different story. He was your average RainWing. Ate mangos, which he told Polar were his favorite; Sleep at noon, which Polar observed his favorite place to go was the lake where the SeaWings played; and not know any useful skills, like reading and counting.

He kept asking Polar to teach him to read which, by the way, was something that Starflight was doing so why would he ask Polar? Polar did it anyway and that was totally NOT because he wanted to spend time with him. He just figured it was his duty as an amazing, intelligent, powerful IceWing.

Lemur was always on board with the group activities and seemed so peaceful all the time that it made Polar want to tear his horns off. Didn't he worry about ANYTHING? Was RainWing life full of content and blissful ignorance? DID HE HAVE TO BE SO COOL AND EASY TO TALK TO?

Polar was up thinking about this one night when he heard a soft whimper. He froze (Ha Ha IceWing pun.) and listened for any other noises. After a few stifled sobs Polar heard the sound of leaves rustling and the pattering of claw steps leaving the cave.

Polar waited a few minutes before opening his eyes and looking over his shoulder. He saw Jasper sleeping soundly in his bed, but Lemur was no where to be found. Polar sat up abruptly. Where did he go? Is he okay? Why do I care? Polar stepped off of his bed and looked around. Jasper was okay, but what was that crying? That surely wasn't Lemur.

Was it?

Polar stepped out of the cave and looked down the dark empty hall. Should he try to find Lemur? Or go back to sleep?

Why should I go after him? Polar thought sharply. He's a RainWing he's fine.

Then why did I hear crying?

Polar shook his wings out and started lightly tramping down the hallway, scowling. Curse his him for wanting to find the RainWing and make sure he's okay. HE ALWAYS HATED IT WHEN THIS HAPPENED.

Polar turned through many corridors. He didn't even know where he was going. He should have stayed in bed but NOOOOOO. He had to find the RAINWING.

Polar came to the intersection near the SeawWing pond. Maybe Lemur went to his favorite napping spot. Polar quietly snuck toward the entrance to the clearing. The sound of filled his ears and he looked into the alcove.

The lake glistened in the moonlight, a few trees lining the sand and rocks where the SeaWings sunned themselves. There were even a rocks poking out of the shallow bank. On one of these rocks was a shaking RainWing.

Polar's heart caught in his throat. Lemur's dark green scales were replaced with a deep sorrowful blue, glistening in the moonlight. Why was he so pretty? Polar shook his head. Focus he thought. You found the RainWing. Now what?

Polar took a step forward. Snap. He swiftly looked down and saw the shards of a twig underneath his talons.

"P-polar?"
