I look down at my feet. One more step, and it could all be over.

I would be free.

I take a deep breath in. The faint smell of food from small vendors lining the city streets reached my nose. Crowds of people walk on the sidewalks. Some have a destination in mind; others don't. A dog happily walks with its owner, enjoying quick pats from passing strangers.

However, the smile that had arisen on my face quickly disappeared. All of the people down there had a purpose. They all contributed in some manner, whether it be in their home, their job, or just their life. I didn't.

I didn't matter to anyone. I didn't have a purpose. The world may be a blessing to them, but it was just a cruel hell to me. Life was too hard. Too hard for not having a purpose.

I was alone. No one would look for me once I disappeared. Nobody would hang flyers; no one would report a missing 19-year-old girl. It would be like I never even existed.

I feel a tear escape from my eye, but not a tear from sadness. It was a tear of joy. I wasn't going to live in this harsh world alone anymore. It will all be over with just one step.

Gritting my jaw in determination, I closed my eyes. I would count to ten. Once I reached the last number, I would jump.

I started counting. "One...Two...Three..." I whispered shakily. It's okay, I thought to myself. All I had to do was reach ten.

Seconds passed. "Eight...Nine..." I spoke quietly. Taking a pause, I took a chance to look up at the night sky one last time.

The stars were beautiful. something I could never be.

'What's the point of saying the last number?" I said to myself, chuckling. "No one's going to hear it anyway."

And I jumped.
