First day, finally. I've been wanting to experience an office job for 6 years. Not quite the ambition you would say, but having no goal or passion all my life, a business woman was the best no-talent-or-aspiration job. I've been waiting for this internship for 3 months , rightfully rejected by two other companies was a bit of a Debbie Downer but I got into Evans Enterprises, and considering how big the company is, I don't even know how I did it.
"You look old." Erin said, scrutinizing me. "Really? You mean my sleek bun, pencil skirt and white linen blouse accompanied by my very trendy grey blazer doesn't make me look younger?" I asked sarcastically. She chuckled. "Okay, okay. You look very work appropriate. And...mature." She paused for a while and continued, "You look great Hailey, I'm just teasing. You're going to do great." I smiled. Getting compliments from Erin was as frequent as pigs flying. "Thanks." Living together with my best friend in New York was the best decision I have ever made. And we weren't just living anywhere, we were living in a 3 story penthouse, thanks to her very successful parents. Life in luxury is not what I have been accustomed to, but being a resident here for more than a year, this place isn't too shabby. We have been in Columbia University since moving here, and it's wonderful. Majoring in business and Erin majoring in Law, we both have our lives more or less together.
"Well, see ya, I'm going to go kick ass at work now!" I shouted while hopping into my black pumps.
The drive there was nerve wrecking. I hope everything goes well. When I arrived at Evans Enterprises, I was taken aback at how large and prestigious this building is. Though I have passed by this building multiple times, the interior was far more exquisite. There was a lot of glass, allowing all of New York's light to get through. The place was flooded with people coming in, going to their respective areas. After speaking to the receptionist, I was told to go to the 24th floor. While waiting for the elevator, I was a wreck my palms were sweaty, and I was shaking. I get nervous easily, I totally saw this coming, I just hopped no one would realize. "Just look confident and appear to know everything" remembering Erin's words.
When the elevator doors opened, I quickly got in and pressed 24. My breathing quickened. "Did you just murder someone?" I got such a shock I dropped my bag. I turned to see where the voice was coming from. I stared at him for a while. I knew this person, but just couldn't lay my finger on it. And then I recognized his smile. "Benny!" I shrieked. I gave him a huge hug. "Oh my gosh, what are you doing here? Last I heard you were in England, and...how did they put it? Ah, pursing love." I said while raising my fingers to show my quotation gesture.
Benny was my high school friend. He was very kind and very sweet. Too bad the kids in my school never noticed that. He was always picked on. I tried to help him as best as I could but he always refused. He preferred to be alone. And he was.
"Well things change, people change, and I realized that pursing that love wasn't worth it. My uncle got me a job here, thank god. What are you doing here? " I understood. Being a college drop out wasn't exactly what you would call "in demand" in the workforce.
"Internship. And I'm really nervous, it's my first day." I said half smiling, "it's great that you work here, at least now I have a friend here." I told him while patting his shoulder. " I know right, it's good to see a familiar face, and I also know that you're gonna do great in this internship. You don't have to worry, look at what you have accomplished so far! Failure isn't your specialty"
"Ding!" And the elevator door opens. "This is my floor, catch up with you later, okay?"
"Sure!" I said giving him another hug. He really has changed a lot. He's lost a lot of weight and has put effort into his looks. It was so hard to recognize him but that smile was definitely a give away. Benny is a handsome man and I hope he knows that.
And then came my floor and the elevator doors opened. I walked out and asked around for a Mrs Wester, since I was told to look for him.
"Miss Greene?" I turned around to see a woman, probably in her mid fifties, wearing a pink dress with dark hair walking up to me. "That's me." I said quietly. "You're here for the internship?" "Yes." "Alright, come with me" she said almost painfully. She seemed unhappy and restless. I walked down the hallway to see many office cubicles and finally we got to mine. "This is your work station, you'll be working under Mr Jay Parker. His office is down the hallway. If you need anything, and try not to, I'll be somewhere here. Okay? Take care young lady." "Thank you!" I said while she walked away.
"Hi, I'm Alaric, nice to meet you" my someone beside my stations said. I smiled. "I'm Hailey, nice to meet you to!"
"I heard you're the new intern. Hope your stay here will be smooth sailing." He appeared to be mid twenties, maybe thirty? By his excessive hand waving, and high pitched voice, he definitely was more of a feminine man. Then again I'm not here to make assumptions. "Thank you! You're really nice! I think I should go meet my new boss now."
"Alright good luck!" He said winking. I was quite positive he was gay. He seemed really nice too.
I walked down the hallway just like I was told to and opened the door to Mr Jay Parker's office. "Mr Parker? I am Miss Hailey Greene, for the internship. I emailed you my information and notified you I was coming today? May I know what I can do to get started? "
He looked up at me, and said "Yes yes, Miss Greene. I-" the phone started ringing. "Wait a second" and he answered the phone. "Yes? No.....Now? But my assistant is not here yet! Fine, he is the boss after all." he had his fore finger and thumb to his forehead. "Alright, bye." he put down the phone and looked at me.
"My assistant isn't here so you'll have to do. You're coming to a meeting with me. " He demanded.
"May I know with whom?" I asked politely.
"The CEO, of course."
