[[Its kinda slow-burn in like, every aspect. Bear w me and I think youll like it, any good storys gotta have some context so thats what this chapter is.]]
Today had been the longest day of the entire school year. It was the end of the semester, so for every class (I had 9 of them), I was doing some sort of final. In science and english it was a project, my Home Ec and Gym finals didnt require any studying, but my other 5 classes were having tests. The worst part was that none of the teachers had collaborated and every. Single. Test. Was on the exact same day- Tomorrow.
So obviously, here I am. My dim, yellowish light glares above my stacks of notebooks. I glance at the mirror on my wall and cant even recognize the girl staring back. My hair looks ratty, I havent even had time to shower for the last three days. My eyebags are heavy and my acne is flaring up worse than it ever has. I've never been confident in myself, really, but the girl whos looking back at me is gross.
I decide that my brain has exerted itself too much by now and pull out my phone. I open snapchat and talk to my friend.
Me: heyyyy so how are your finals going
Adrian: i fr fr dont know how you got stuck with 5 finals in one day. I think youre the only one.
Me: eh what can you do. Wanna come over for a study jam?
Adrian: you know as well as I do that if I come over, studying will be the last thing to happen.
I snort a little. Adrians been my best friend only for a couple years, but it feels like she knows me better than my family. Honestly, she probably does. My mom hasnt been fully sober for years now and I think my dad wants to live at his work. Theyre both too lazy or too busy to get a divorce, so they still pretend theyre married, but theyve each found an escape from eachother in one way or another. Adrian's the only one who knows this about me.
She moved to my city 2 and a half years ago, and we met, oddly enough, at the mall. I worked there for a summer just to raise money, and one day she came to my counter with both her arms full of many, many boxes of raisins. Obviously, I asked why? And we just clicked. We still laugh about it sometimes. She's a sort of lifeboat for me.
Soon, I got a text saying 'here!' And i ran downstairs as quietly as I could. I slowly pulled on the door and let in my friend. The first thing I noticed was that she was horribly wet.
"Dont drip everywhere!! What happened to you, its not raining!" I asked, nudging her up to the second story and to my room.
"You'll never believe it, one of your neighbors got a new dog and he is the CUTEST! He was playing in the sprinkler and I couldnt help but go pet him." She said. I noticed her dark gray eyes were wide, showing off the specks of sapphire blue around her pupils. I smiled gently at her.
"Sounds amazing. Let me get you a towel." I left the room momentarily, and when I came back, towel in hand, she was looking at my desk.
"Good grief, I cant imagine having to do all this. Why'd you invite me over, now youre sure to fail at least half of these!" She teased.
"Who knows! Im not feeling it tonight," I said, truthfully, "besides, Ive got this weird feeling."
Adrian looked at me like I was mad, but her exlression quickly changed to a curious smirk. "Yeah? What kinda feelin?"
"Like... i guess I dont know how to describe it. It feels like it doesnt matter that much." I rubbed the back of my hand and looked at the floor. Adrian could tell I was serious and sat down on my bed.
"Hey, I dont know what kinda voodoo vibes you're getting, but I can tell you one thing for sure: It doesnt matter." She smiled. I looked up at her with my eyebrows furrowed.
"Girl, youre a senior. Youve put so much effort into your grades before now that your GPA is probably as high as its gonna get. Who cares about some stupid semi-final or whatever!" Adrian explained. She was always very passionate about things like education and government. I never got that much into it, but I admired the way she stood up for her opinion no matter what.
"Thats not exactly what I meant, but its definitely reassuring. Thanks," i smiled, letting out a breath. I moved to the side of my room to open my window and let the chilly night air inside.
"Wanna sneak out then?" Adrian said. She always got this rebellious look in her eyes when she said things like this. It might not have been obvious, but I knew her too well. Rebelling is in her blood, it gives her something to work toward. She hates anyone and anything that tries to control her. Sometimes, with her thick, tan hair that she cut short and her toothy grin, she reminds me of some ancient wolf. It makes me think about what she could have done in her past lives. She must have been beautiful, and a force to be reckoned with.
Past lives are really interesting to me, of you havent noticed. I think Im some sort of bear. Or a baby who died from polio. Who knows. I find it much more entertaining to try and figure out what kind of history other people's spirits have and what journeys their hearts have travelled without their mind knowing.
I took a quick shower, then put my hair into a braid. It was still wet so I patted my braid with a towel, but left it to do whatever. I put on some baby blue workout shorts, a gray tshirt with a pair of wings designes on the front, and a thin, royal blue jacket. I slipped on some socks and my checkered vans before climbing out the window behind Adrian. We shimmied our way to the ground and hopped over the fence of my yard. A couple of neighbor's dogs barked but we ducked into an alley behind an apartment complex to be out of sight.
"Ok, I say we go to my house real quick and steal my moms car. Im 99 percent sure she left the keys in there again." Adrian said, walking through the dark.
"And shes not afraid the car will get stolen?" I asked.
"She hasnt cared about anything for a while." Adrian said, her voice deepening slightly. It was almost similar to a growl in the back of her throat. Both Adrian amd I had trash families. Adrians dad died when she was 10, and her mom blew up so much that she was lut on meds to keep her moods contained- but it contained the good moods, too. Adrian described her as many things, such as robot, inanimate, and businesswoman. I just wished there was some way I could help.
We were about halfway to Adrians house when something odd happened. Adrian stopped suddenly, and I noticed that the fround in front of her feet was glowing neon blue. Out of nowhere, a giant crack ripped through the ground, spreading the earth beneath our feet. Before we knew it, we were consumed by the planet.
