it was a saturday evening, rain was pouring and the sound of raindrops hitting pavement echoed throughout the streets. millie was carrying a bright orange umbrella, and was struggling to close it as she walked inside a well-lit cafe.  "come on- ah!" she struggled, finally closing it. she glanced around the cafe. the atmosphere was calm, soft music was playing and the light smell of coffee filled the room. the barista glanced over the counter "hello, can i help you?" millie nodded, as her phone buzzed. her heart raced as she thought it was a text from her boyfriend, finn, but it was just her reminder app telling her to pick up milk before heading home. "where is he?" millie muttered under her own breath. the barista asked her again "hey, can i get you something?" millie sighed and walked up to the counter. "can i just get an iced coffee, please?" the barista punched some numbers into the cash register. "that'll be $2.65." millie got out her debit card, swiped it, and went to sit down. but before she did, she turned around "excuse me? have you seen a guy in here? curly black hair, usually wearing a denim jacket?" the barista nodded and pointed to the back of the cafe. "he went back there a while ago." millie, confused, quickly walked to the back of the cafe. as she turned the corner, she saw her boyfriend, finn, sitting at the table with a girl. she had dirty blonde hair and hazel eyes. millie had seen her from around school. "what the hell, finn?" he quickly swung around. "millie! uh- hey," millie, holding back her tears, walked straight up to him and gave him a quick, hard slap. "what the fuck, what are you doing here with another girl, on a date?" the girl stood up out of her chair, "it's our date, whoever you are. i don't know who you think you are, but back off," millie let out a cry, then quickly walked away. she didn't know what to think. why was he here with another girl? was millie not good enough for him? she walked up to the counter. "is my coffee ready?" millie sniffled, trying not to sob. the barista turning around, "yeah it's almost ready- wait, are you okay?" millie shrugged. "my boyfrie- ex boyfriend, is back there with another girl. they're on a date. we were supposed to have a date here tonight." "damn, the hell with him. you're probably too pretty for him anyways." that made millie laugh. "what's your name?" she asked the barista. "sadie, and yours?" "millie." they grinned at eachother as millie took her coffee from off the counter. "do you go to crawford high?" sadie nodded. "see you at school i guess, sadie." millie said, walking out the door and opening her umbrella. as she walked out the door, she realized what had just happened. she let out a loud sob. her boyfriend of 4 months, her favorite person in the entire world, had completely shattered her heart. she didn't know what to do, but all she could do was cry. she walked up to her car, setting down her coffee. as she closed her umbrella, it hit the coffee cup, making it fall over. millie cried, everything was going wrong today. she picked up the cup, set it in her car, and drove home.
as she arrived home, her mom immediately asked "did you get the milk?" millie sighed, teary eyed. "no, mom. i just caught finn cheating on me, so it wasn't at the top of my list." she stormed off to her room, changed out of her clothes, put on her pjs, and cried herself to sleep.
