Camila just got to New York City that day, and the move had been nothing less than dreadful. She, her parents, and her best friend/roommate Dinah moved everything up to the third floor apartment in the hardest four hours she’s ever had.
She was never athletic or fit in any way, so just getting up the stairs was a work-out.
Add a large cardboard box filled with plates and bowls and you were essentially asking her to accomplish the impossible.
She plopped onto her new couch, hating it a bit less than she did when she had to hold one end on the trip to get it up there.
Dinah plopped down right next to her, resting her feet on Camila’s thighs.
She hated when the younger girl did that, but she was too beat to do anything about it, so Dinah got to use her as a foot-rest.
Her father assembled the last end table and brushed his knees off as he got up from the floor. “Okay Mila, you girls are all set.”
“Thanks Papi,” she called from the couch, too tired to give him anymore of a reaction.
“Now, you girls better be good. I won’t be seeing you for a few weeks, can you handle everything on your own?”
“Yes Papi, I’m 24 now, I’m a big girl.”
He bent down and kissed the top of her head. “I know mija, it’s just hard to see you as anything but my little girl.”
“Thanks for the love Papa C, not like I’m still right here,” Dinah called out. He chuckled and moved to kiss her on the head as well.
“Dinah, you know you’re my favorite. You’ve always been like a second daughter to me.”
She reached a hand back to grab onto the man’s arm. “Aw, thanks Papa C. You’re my favorite too.” Camila rolled her eyes at the interaction, knowing full and well that he meant it.
Camila had known Dinah all her life, and when her family up and moved out of Miami, Dinah refused to leave her best friend and second family behind, so she stayed with them. The two girls grew up as sisters ever since. And she definitely bonded with Alejandro more than even Camila did.
She figured she’d never talk to her dad about sports, except basketball, or cars, or anything remotely masculine and that was completely okay with her. She was perfectly content being a mama’s girl.
Sinu Cabello came out of the bathroom, picking up her jacket from the hook by the door. “Dinah, make sure you call your mother at some point today, I spoke to her yesterday.”
Dinah absentmindedly grunted in acknowledgement, never looking up from her phone. “Mila honey, make sure this one gets up for work in the mornings. Please?” she said, squeezing Dinah’s shoulder.
Camila laughed and nodded in agreement. She muttered something quietly to her husband behind the couch while Camila turned on the television to hook up the channels. “Okay girls, we’re going. Hugs?”
Camila lifted herself off the couch with a grunt and made her way over to her parents. She hugged her father tight while Dinah hugged her mom.
After a few seconds, they swapped and hugged the other parent. They pulled away, standing in front of each other. Sinu cupped Camila’s cheek, stroking it with her thumb. “Make sure you call us if you need anything, or if you hear anyone talking in your head,” she said, saying the last part so only Camila could hear, with a wink.
Camila groaned again, tired of her mother’s constant nagging about her soulmate’s Voice.
The two parents left the girls, and they resumed their positions on the couch. Dinah spoke up first. “So did Mama C bring up the Voice thing again? I’m only assuming, since you groaned.”
