Her heart pounds and her throat closes up like a cocoon of fear. Ghoulish actors surround her, jumping from hay bales and snarling sadistic words into her ear. She jumps at every little noise, and we jump with her. Lights stay on through the night until the sun rises the next day because we all feel much safer that way. Her instances of true fright are usually short lived, but the lingering thought of what she has seen keeps us awake. When she was little, we spent countless nights in fear after she watched a scary movie for the first time. The movie had her imagining little monsters under her bed for a year. Each morning we woke up with bags under our eyes because of her fear of those fictional creatures.
