luke
luke steps outside and the first thing he notices is where some animal must have gotten in to his marigolds. the second thing he notices is the large moving van parked semi-in front of his house. her house.

"what am i going to do with you little guys?" he mutters to the flowers and shakes his head. "you're too beautiful, the street cats can't resist."

luke goes to a his gardening box on the porch and pulls out a small shovel and a watering can, which he fills up with the hose.

"too pretty.." he mumbles again. she really loves marigolds. luke does, too.
he replants a few of the flowers; one orange section and two yellow. luke pours water on them carefully, lovingly.
suddenly, a man emerges from the house next door. well, a boy-man. he can't be any older than luke himself.

"hello, neighbour!" he calls boisterously, and luke knows he's never met the guy, but he seems familiar somehow.

luke is not keen on social interaction. he looks the boy from head to toe, and he sees he's wearing black skinny jeans (with holes in the knees, dear god) and a nasa shirt, and he's got lines of blond in his dark, fluffy hair. he doesn't belong in this town, luke thinks. but then he thinks again, and looks at himself.

luke's an eighteen year old boy who lives on his own and takes care of his beloved flowers in black skinny jeans (also holey, none of the neighbours can catch a break) and band tshirts and flannels with his hair quiffed. plus a lip ring. he belongs any where but here.

"um.. what's your name?" the dark haired guy says next. luke was staring for too long.

"oh, sorry. i'm lucas? but you can call me luke. i, uh- if you want,- you can if you want to," luke stutters his reply and wants to hit himself in the head with a shovel.
"hello, lucas, i'm calum!" the boy (who finally has a name for luke to over analyse) exclaims, and luke decides he's too chirpy. "what are you doing out here so early?"

luke is flustered. he knows he probably shouldn't be, but he is. "i, the flowers- i can't not. i have- it's my garden-" he shakes his head. "it's only eight. i'm caring for my garden."

"oh, of course, it's 'only eight.' eight's not early at all, what was i thinking?" calum says, sarcastic and smiling, and luke is going to lose it.

"yeah. garden. i, i should probably get back to these flowers, it was- uh, it was nice to meet you, calum."

"you too, luke." calum smiles. "neighbor."
calum turns to the van, and luke watches him as he goes. he really doesn't fit. he doesn't, but neither does luke, and maybe luke has a small hope that calum will talk to him again. maybe a big hope, because calum is pretty. not pretty. calum is actually really hot, and luke wants to watch him forever.

"oh, and luke?" calum looks at luke again. "i really, really like your flowers."
luke smiles, but doesn't say any thing, because holy shit, his new, obnoxious,
hot neighbour likes his flowers.

"hopefully we'll be able to catch up soon," calum grins and takes more boxes inside.
luke nods, smile still on his face. "me too," he whispers once calum's gone.

he goes to his begonias. "you're gorgeous," he tells them.

"yesterday,

all my troubles seemed so far away

now it looks as though they're here to stay

oh, i believe in yesterday," he sings quietly.

his mother, two years deceased, had always told him, "if you sing to them, they'll grow." he believes it. if his mother told him that peanut butter makes you go bald, he'd believe that, and never eat peanut butter again. he trusts her.

trusted. you can't really trust a dead person.
luke goes back in his house only to retrieve the pansies he bought yesterday. he sits down next to the dead pansies that he figured he'd finally replace, and digs them up, planting the new ones in their place, humming quietly.
