Later that evening, I gave up on playing pretend and went up to the room I share with Clancy sometimes. As I walked in, I began to search for the silver pendant from the League. I don't want to think about how Clancy would react if he saw it, honestly. Tonight was already a mess as it was.
When I flipped the switch for the lights to come on, I saw Clancy sitting on the bed, looking out the window. I hadn't seen him since the discussion he was avoiding earlier, and now I wished I had avoided it as well. "Looking for this, Amara?" He held up the silver pendant from the League.
Oh shit, I thought to myself.
"Clance, lemme explain-"
"No, let me." He stood up, and then turned to me. "For six years I have tried my best to give you everything. The accident at East River, Amara, you know I didn't want that to happen. I had no other choice. But, there are some things that don't always turn out the way they should."
I just stood there, taking in the words he was throwing at me. "How do I know you're not just bullshitting me?"
He steps closer to me until he finally says, "You have no idea what I've done for you."
"Oh yeah? And what's that exactly, Clancy? Explain to me how everything we've been through is okay? You built East River based on the opposite of what you promised me. What do you need an army for anyway? Who are you trying to get back at and make jealous? Your father? It doesn't matter, Clance, because you are not him." I'm fighting for something I don't even know. What am I saying? "What is the point of all this?"
I could tell he was getting angry within every couple seconds, but I can tell he's trying to keep his cool. "Dammit!" He says loudly. Clancy punches the mirror right beside him, and the glass shatters everywhere on the floor. "I cant do this anymore Amara!" He sighs, letting out heavy breaths. "I cant keep lying to you... a-about who you are.."
I stood next to him, my gentle hand pressed against his lower back. "What are you talking about, Clance?"
He doesn't look at me as he admits the truth of my undoing. "I've blinded you."
