Masky and I stood in silence as the boss left the room, letting the recently resolved scenario sink in. I sighed a breath of relief once I was sure that Slenderman was gone; I didn't want to be the one to have to explain how the toaster actually caught on fire and to be honest, I wasn't so sure if I would even know where to begin.

"Thanks..." I said.

Masky turned to me, "For what?"

"For coming to my rescue." I replied, "I honestly don't know what I would have done if you hadn't stepped in when you did."

"Oh, well..." Masky shrugged, "Don't mention it."

"But..." I began... but Masky cut me off.

"No, seriously..." He said, "Don't mention it."

I nodded and decided to drop the subject for the time being; I didn't want to press Masky any further. The two of us fell into silence again as we finished cleaning up Toby's mess. I put the fire extinguisher back under the kitchen sink and washed my hands before helping Masky get rid of the burnt remains of what used to be Toby's waffles.

Masky was the first to break the silence.

"There," He said, "That's the last of it."

I nodded, "Yes that should do it."

I took the small plastic bag we had used to clean up the burnt food and quickly disposed of the evidence before anyone else could question us. It was bad enough lying to Slenderman about it; I didn't want to have to come up with another excuse as to why the kitchen smelled of smoke.

"Hey, Masky..." I began, "Can I ask you something?"

Masky turned to me, "What is it?" He asked in return.

"Why'd you do it?" I asked my voice curious.

Masky paused for a moment. "What do you mean?" He said finally.

"I mean, why did you lie to protect Toby?" I asked, "I thought you found him annoying."

Masky sighed and shrugged a little. I wondered if he was going to go on this big long speech about how he found Toby annoying and how he never lies to the boss; but what he did say actually took me by surprise. It certainly wasn't what I had thought I would hear.

"Well, you're not wrong there. I do find Toby annoying." He said, "But, it's important for us proxies to stick together and look after each other no matter what."

I nodded.

"True... but why didn't you just tell Slenderman the truth?" I asked, "I mean you had the perfect opportunity to get back at Toby... but you didn't. Why?"

Masky shrugged, "I just didn't see a point in getting the boss angry when the problem was already resolved."

"Oh..." I let my words trail off.

"Yeah," said Masky, "Besides, Slenderman's scary when he's mad."

I chuckled, "Then in that case. I'm glad you lied."

I took one last look at the burnt appliance and unplugged it from the wall; with the amount of times this thing has been set ablaze, I don't think there was anything any one of us could do to fix it. I could feel Masky's eyes staring at me from beneath his mask as I took the burnt toaster off the counter.

"Yes, Masky?"

Masky didn't say anything.

"Come on man, I know your staring at me." I said, "So, if you're going to say something, say it."
