the purple caterpillar

Once upon a time there was a purple caterpillar named Damion. He was the only one of his kind left.

He was a huge fan of blueberries.

On a particular hot Sunday day he saw a large (for a caterpillar at least) blueberry hanging on a branch. It looked full of juice too.

"That'll make a nice breakfast!" he thought.

He inched his way to it but when he went to grab the ripe berry, it was too heavy for him to pick off. Too much risk involved...

He sighed and looked down. There he saw an ant carrying a rather large leaf.

He shouted at the ant, getting their attention. "Hey! You! Wait!"

He made his way down to ground level as the ant crossed her arms.

"I'm busy" she said in a bitter tone, "so make it quick. I'm working here."

"Hey, woah! I won't spend much of your time, miss..." he waved his hand(?) in a circular motion, implying for her to respond with her name.

"Leila." (Lay•La)

Damion continued, "I only require a bit of assistance."

"And why should I spend my valuable time on you?" she interrogated.

"I might have something worth while." He smiled but it looked more like a smirk.

Leyla and most of the insect commu- nity knew of Damion's deceitful and crafty nature. He was best known for his lies.

But to add even more fule to the ant's doubt, she saw his reflection cross his fingers(?) on a drop of dew, on a leaf behind him.

She decided to play along.

"Ok, fine. But let's just make it quick."

The caterpillar lead the way up to the blueberry, telling her what she had to do.

"So you basically just have to pick it off the branch for me. A strong ant like yourself should have no trouble."

Leyla just rolled her eyes.

She went to grab to berry off from the branch where it was hanging from and pretend to "slip", dropping it to the ground where it splattered.

She turned around and shrugged, "oops."

Damion stared at his now ruined meal. His mouth wide open.

Leila whispered to him, "you shouldn't have tried to play me a fool" then gave him a sweet grin as she left to get back to work.

The purple caterpillar watched her go with shocked eyes.
