Chapter One
Moving
Today is the day. The last day of school, I’ve always hated the last day of school. I have to leave my friends, school work and well, learning all together. I love school. I love reading and learning and everything about school, and of course, the last day comes so fast. As I get on the bus, I wave goodbye to my teachers and friends. “ Bye Ms. Smith, Mr. Frinsec, and Mrs. Dran!”, I yell outside the bus window. “ Mckeyla! Get down before you get us both in trouble!”, my best friend Melissa says.”Sorry I’ll just miss everyone, and besides you know I love school.”, I say apologetically. “It’s alright but seriously I don’t want to get in trouble, so stay low.”, she says back. For about thirty minutes on the bus I speak again, “Are you doing anything this summer?”, I ask. “Actually for once yeah, I’m going to the Caribbean islands! My parents have been saving all year!”, she says excitedly. “Oh wow that’s awesome Melissa! My mom says that where we are going is really exciting too! Although she hasn’t told me yet, she said that it was a surprise.”, I say. Another thirty minutes pass and the bus pulls up to our stop.
“Bye Mr. Benson I’ll see you next year.”, I say. As I get off the bus Malisa heads in the opposite direction from my house. “Bye, Melissa, I’ll text you on Skype to see how the Carribeans are!”, I yell, half- hoping she could hear me. Ok then let’s see what my mom is planning for the summer. As I walk up to my house I see a U-haul and my dad carrying boxes. Huh? What’s going on… Are we going somewhere for the whole summer? “MOM?!”, I yell in the empty house. “I’m in the family room!”, she yells from down the hall. As I walk through the door I see my mom packing away boxes with more boxing tape than they need. The couch was still there. It was an old, boring couch that we had had for years. The TV was gone as well as the old coffee table that had scratches covering the surface. “Um… What’s going on?”I ask. She looks up at me with a smile, ''Drum roll please...WE’RE MOVING!”she says with a huge smile and hands up in the air.
I feel as if my world is crumbling beneath my feet. I can feel the tears welling in my eyes. My mom’s arms go down and her smile falls,” Honey, are you ok?'' she asked, concerned. “Oh yeah, totally mom, I’m fine, even though you are basically telling me that I have to leave everything I know behind while giving JAZZHANDS!”, I say sarcastically and angrily. “Sweetie, I wanted to tell you sooner, your dad got an amazing job in South Carolina that pays a lot of money. I’m sorry I guess I thought you would be more excited.” she says sadly. “Yeah, whatever I’m going up to my room.'' I say as I storm away.
As soon as I get in my room I get my computer and sit in an empty corner.

Hm… What am I gonna do with myself. I can’t believe she didn’t tell me before school ended.
“Honey, we are leaving in a few weeks to our new house, so it can be furnished by the time we get there.”my mom calls upstairs. “Ok.”, I say. “Whatever.”, I say under my breath. “Ok, great honey, I promise you’ll love our new home!”she said excitedly. “I hope you sleep well tonight. I am sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.” she says with one last smile then she walks out the door.
