I Think You Might Be Worth the Risk

"Hey, Tosh?" Kaminari's soft voice drifted across the space between them where both boys were messing around on their phones. They had finished some homework together in Kaminari's room but neither boy wanted to call it a night yet.

"Mmm?"

Kaminari locked his phone and tossed it beside him where he sat against the wall. "Tell me about your family?"

Shinsou looked across at Kaminari sharply before he sat on the edge of the bed. He took a deep breath and was quiet for so long that Kaminari wasn't sure he was going to respond.

"Remember how I told you I didn't realise I was using my quirk when it first manifested?"

Kaminari nodded, letting him continue.

"Turns out I was controlling my parents. Just harmless little things like getting them to be quiet or get me something. Then I heard them fighting, I explicitly remember my mother shrieking that she would not raise a son who was a villain. Soon after that I was dropped at an orphanage. I've bounced around a few homes since then. My quirk was too much to handle for most of my foster families."

Shinsou blinked as if realising where he was and the memories cleared. "The paperwork was only recently finalised for my most recent family and I can see this one sticking. I actually can't wait for you to meet them." His mouth ticked up and Kaminari felt so much love for this new family who had brought that smile to his face.

"I don't really remember my parents much, sometimes a smell will trigger a memory but it's vague and hazy." He looked quickly across at Kaminari who he'd never seen so quiet and continued, "But I don't think I want to remember them either. They're only people who didn't want me."

"I've had a hard time getting close to people because of it," Shinsou finished quietly as he looked back down at his feet.

Kaminari came over to where he was and sat next to him on the side of the bed. He reached out a comforting hand and rest it on Shinsou's knee. "That's why you didn't want to be friends, isn't it? Because you didn't trust me not to abandon you."

His voice was gentle and it wasn't quite a question and Shinsou felt a deep sense of vulnerability at the assessment.

"Hey," Kaminari whispered as he twisted around and brushed his knuckles of his free hand across Shinsou's cheek bone. "You'll always be wanted by the right people."

Shinsou's breath caught in his throat. "I'm starting to see that."

Kaminari squeezed the knee still under his hand. "I hope you know, I never would have broken your heart. If only you'd been brave enough to give it to me instead of pulling away," Kaminari said softly, afraid if he spoke any louder it would break the spell cast over them. "I'll teach you to trust me and maybe I might be worth the risk," he whispered as he looked across at the side of Shinsou's face.

Shinsou looked across at him but Kaminari was already looking at him, his eyes so open and inviting that Shinsou's insecurities didn't feel quite so big. He swallowed the lump forming in his throat and managed to whisper. "I think you might be worth the risk because I really like you, Denki."

Kaminari looked softly back at him and a slow, genuine smiled curved his lips. "I really like you too, you know."

Shinsou moved closer with that almost imperceptible smile. "Yeah?"

Kaminari nodded as the butterflies in his stomach fluttered to life.

Those golden eyes were so open and inviting, and Shinsou very slowly, very purposefully brought his hand up and after hesitating only briefly, tucked a piece of golden hair back behind Kaminari's ear. "I don't need to be brave to trust you."

Kaminari turned his head into the touch and Shinsou felt the breath of his words brush over his lips when he spoke. "Do it, Hitoshi."

It was that moment that seemed to stretch on forever like when you see the lightning and are waiting for the thunder as Shinsou leaned toward him.

His thumb brushed softly over Kaminari's jaw, and all he could hear was his own heartbeat, too loud and too fast. His lungs seemed to squeeze too tight and the butterflies in his stomach kicked it up a notch. The only thing anchoring him down was that warm hand on his cheek as his own hand slipped up to the back of Shinsou's neck.

Shinsou could see all of the honey gold tones in the blond's wide eyes just before they fluttered closed and he leaned in enough to feel the barest hint of a touch of his lips against his own. His heart beat went into overdrive and he finally pressed his lips against Kaminari's.

Kaminari felt the touch of Shinsou's lips all the way down to his toes. It was soft and sweet and so perfect that all he could do was melt against him until Shinsou pulled back all too soon.

Kaminari looked up at him from under his lashes and slowly dropped the hand that was wound around Shinsou's neck.

Shinsou took his hand before it settled in his lap and entwined their fingers. He brought their hands up to his lips and kissed Kaminari's knuckles and somehow that felt even more intimate than what they'd just done. If he wasn't blushing before then he damn well was now.

Shinsou released his hand and checked the time on his phone. "I'd better get back."

Kaminari only nodded with a blushey smile.

Shinsou got his things together with the same smile, stealing glances at the blond the whole time. He swung his bag over his shoulder and leaned in to where Kaminari was still sitting on the edge of the bed. He kissed him again, chaste and sweet, before whispering, "I think you're definitely worth the risk, Denks."

Kaminari only held it together long enough for his dorm door to close before he squealed into his pillow.
