" I wanted to tell you something. I have been working on something for a very long time but last night was different." I heard Dr. Brent's voice in his office. "What was different? What did you do this time, Brent?" There went Dr. Hayes's voice. I sensed something fishy especially when this kind of conversation happened in the middle of the night when everyone went home to their families. I dropped the mop i was holding as quietly as possible and walked over to Dr. Brent's door.

"I have always wanted to change the world. Did it ever cross your mind that this world is full of evil and less good? God once flood the Earth, but he is not going to do that again. So, I created a virus called 'The Flare' that spreads in just seconds", says Dr. Brent. "What will it do to us?" asked Dr. Hayes. I could hear how anxious he was. I was too. "The virus slowly eats away the brain, and eventually turns the victims into blood-thirsting humans who consider cannibalism", replied Dr. Brent.

I was shocked by Dr. Brent's words and I knew Dr. Hayes was too. He asked Dr. Brent if he was insane. "Unfortunately, I am insane but these can make me well-known, these can make us well-known", says Dr. Brent. I peeped through the gap between the door and the wall of Dr. Brent's office. Dr. Brent was holding a tube-like gas. "What do you mean 'we'? I am not joining you in your psycho experiment. You are out of your goddamn mind! You have not even thought about the cure. You are sick! You're on your own!", with that, Dr. Hayes stormed out of Dr. Brent's office.

Dr. Hayes saw me standing outside Dr. Brent's office. Tears rolling down my cheeks. I went back to the janitor room to keep the cleaning items. "Lena" There were 2 knocks on the door. "Do you want to grab a cup of coffee nearby?" asked Dr. Hayes outside the janitor's room. "Yeah, sure. Let me put these away and change into something comfortable", I replied while wiping my tears. Took my coat off a hanger and locked the room. Found Dr. Hayes sitting on a chair outside the room with his head in his hands. A scientist so terrified after finding out his partner had made a deadly virus and most probably will never find a cure to it. "Dr. Hayes?" and he looked up to me with tears stinging his eyes.

The weather was freezing cold that night. We went to a coffee shop a few blocks away from the B.C.K. building. "How much did you hear?", asked Dr. Hayes while sipping his steaming hot coffee. "Pretty much everything", I replied as i lowered down my head. "I'm sorry you had to listen to that. For now all we need to do is just stay at home and try not to get infected once the virus spread" he said. When he walked me home and gave me a kiss on the cheek, I never knew that night was the last normal night we had and when i wake up the next morning, everyone was infected. The world was a mess.

It had been 2 years since the apocalypse started. Had been fighting and killing the infected, whom I call the Dead. For the past 2 years of killing, I had not found a survivor, not even one normal beating heart with warm blood flowing all over their body. Just insane cannibals eating each other, until one day I decided to get back to B.C.K building to find a cure. Maybe Dr. Brent did make a cure or maybe he didn't. It is the kind of rick one should take whether or not you are a scientist, you should always try to save the world.

I was lucky enough to find some guns in the police station when a fat policeman still holding a donut in his left hand charged to attack me in the ammunition room. While I was waiting for the elevator to reach the floor I was in, one of the Dead jumped on me from the second floor. With my back against the cold hard ground, I tried pushing the Dead's head away from my face to avoid its ugly rotten teeth to get a bite of my nose using the AK47 I was holding. It was hard to push away the Dead when its body was on top of yours until my arms almost gave up on me when someone yanked the Dead off my body. I looked up and find Dr. Hayes with a machete.

"Lena, what are you doing here?", asked Dr. Hayes as he pulled me into a tight hug. "Searching for the cure. I thought you were infected", I replied. "Do you think there's a cure for all the cannibals out there?", he asked me as the elevator door opens before us. "Maybe. I'm not one hundred percent positive that there is but my instincts tells me that there is", I said as I pressed the button to Dr. Brent's office and watched as the elevator door closed. "What are you doing here anyway carrying a machete around looking like you're gonna chop of the dead for a barbecue dinner?", I joked and walked out of the elevator.

"I was looking for you...", his voice trailing behind me. I stopped to look at him. His face flashed with the terrified look looking at a cell door before Dr. Brent's office. I got curious and walked over to the cell which was a few centimeters away from the door and there he was, hung and shot in the head with a note tied around his noseless head. "Dr. Brent...".

I found a crowbar next to a tipped over metal table and put the curve part of the crowbar at the notch of the cell door. "Wait, what are you doing?", asked Dr. Hayes once he got his senses back. "Opening this door. There's a note", I replied as I struggled to push the crowbar. "Wait, it's not safe" " The only thing that is not safe is to be living in this affected world full of dead walking freely. The note might help us with the cure, Hayes. Now will you please help me push this door open?", I grumbled. Within a second, Dr. Hayes placed the machete into its case tied on his back and pushed the crowbar and the door flies open.

"I found the cure to this virus but I was not able to make the cure as it needs the blood of the immunes. The syrum is kept safely in the mini freezer in the safe. All it needs is 3 drops of blood from the immunes and put it into the extract machine. This will neutralize the syrum. You must take this syrum to Tokyo. There, you can find Dr. Komoyata. He is an immunie. As you know, to be infected, you have to be scratched or worse bitten. There is also another way to get infected, that is without being bitten or scratched. The air is already full of spreading virus. So, if you do not get any symptoms and have been living for months or even years, you are one of the immune", was written on the note.

"We're immunes?" I looked at Dr. Hayes in disbelief. The sound of the dead screaming broke the silence between us. I began reloading my guns and gave Dr. Hayes a Dessert Eagle 50 caliber. It is the strongest handgun. With just one shot on the head, everything in the head explodes. He opened the cell door slowly and looked around. "We have to get to his office before they reach us". I nodded at Dr.Hayes's words and walked out of the cell.

We walked inside Dr. Brent's office and shut the door behind us just when the dead started walking around the hall smelling for fresh blood. While I was looking out for the dead, Dr. Hayes took the syrum out of the mini freezer and prick his finger. "3 drops of blood, right?", he whispered and I nodded. 3 drops of blood and the syrum turned blue. He then put the syrum into the extract machine. "Hey, Lena? I was thinking maybe when this is all over, would you go out with me?", he asked out of the blue. I looked at him in disbelief. I have always had a crush on him ever because he was always treating me nicely ever since day 1 of working with B.C.K. . "Erm..yes. I mean, sure", I replied as I felt my face flushed.

We found a Hummer when we were walking along the highway. We thought about flying a plane to Tokyo but none of the planes could function. The ride to Tokyo was 4 days only with a stop for gas and snacks. The moment we reached Tokyo, we did not bother about the looks of the surrounding, We were used to it back home. Messy street, dead bodies everywhere and burnt buildings. Nothing new until we reached the B.C.K. building.

There were soldiers guarding the building. From the dead I supposed. "We're here to see Dr. Komoyata", Dr. Hayes said and they brought us to Dr. Komoyata. "Dr. Brent gave the instructions clearly to the immunes to give this syrum to you. It is the cure to stop this apocalypse. I believe you know what to do with it", said Dr. Hayes as he handed the syrum to Dr. Komoyata. Dr. Komoyata's assistant thanked us and gave us a room to rest, new clothes and proper meal.

3 years living in Tokyo and everything was getting better. Less infected, more immunes. My relationship with Dr. Hayes got exciting the moment I said 'yes' to his proposal. I, Lena Clare, was just a janitor before the apocalypse. Now, I teach the younger generations on how to defend themselves and fight the infected. Sometimes I help my fiance, Dr. Hayes Michael in his lab dissecting the dead.
