Found Out

Alec and I walk silently for a bit. “What were you doing in the graveyard anyway? It was stupid of you, mundie.” The word now made me angry. “I have a name, you know.” I reply stonily, my face turned down into a scowl. “Whatever, mundane.” Alec smirks as he sees my face light up with anger. Another expression crosses his face; I couldn’t recognize what it was though. Eventually I arrive home. Home is a small yellow house. “Good riddance, mundane.”

“Nice to see you too, Alec.” I mutter. I turn to walk up the steps when I catch movement out of the corner of my eye. The hairs on the back of my neck stand. “Who’s there? Show yourself!” I see the one person I was hoping to see. “Jace.” I just stand there, too stunned to move. “I thought Hodge was interrogating you.”

“Well, he didn’t ask much, just how I saw you, if I knew anything. I told him just the graveyard and you were a mundie. He said you healed faster than most, probably because of the rune, and I suggested you a fast healing one.” Another thought pops up in my head. It seems almost random. “Alec doesn’t seem to like me much, does he?”

“What makes you say that?”

“He keeps calling me a mundane and treats me like I’m a disease.”

“Just give him a chance. So, ready to learn?” He asks. “Hodge-“ I start, but he puts a finger up. “Leave that to me.” He smiles, an almost real smile.

“Remind me why I trust you?” I sigh, shaking my head. “Couldn’t be because I saved your life three times. What do you want to work on first?”

“Well, Hodge thinks you’re out and you’ve forgotten about me so how about runes? We can hang out at the park.”

“Wow. Clever and a Shadowhunter. Sounds good. See you tonight. Do you still have your stele?” I pull my stele out, rotating it in my hands. “Why did you take from me?” I ask, remembering earlier. “I didn’t want Alec to know. Keep it close. And this. You never know when you’ll need either of these.” He pulls out a dagger. “Your mother’s probably worried now.”

“See you tonight.” I say closing the door. “Chloe? Is that you?” A worried voice calls from the living room. “Yes, mom, I’m home.” I call back, reassuring her. The afternoon sunlight streams onto my hair. “I was so worried! Where did you go?” My mom asks, hugging me tight. “I went around.”

“What’s that in your hand, seeing my stele and the dagger. “Some pens.” I reply. “Mom, can I go to the park this evening?” I ask, seeing if she lets me out of the house after this. “Sure. Why not.” I sigh in relief. At least Jace won’t have to break me out. “Mom, I’m not normal.” I say, confessing. “You’re a very bright child, we know this.” She says, clearly not understanding my statement.

"No, I mean I’m not normal, I can see demons and angels. I’m a Shadowhunter.” I half expect her to ask me how she found out. “Oh.” Is all my mother utters, her head hanging low. “I might not be around much, being as I have training and lessons.” I say, hoping I don’t upset her more than I have. “Whatever.” Is all she said as though she didn’t care. She walks back into the living room. She didn't care. Didn't give a damn even.

I run out the house, tears brimming my eyes. I clutch my dagger and stele in my hands as I run to the Stargazer Park. I find a large pine tree and sit under it. I hear footsteps. I stop and meld into the shadow as best I can. I see black. I peek through the needles and see a mess of black hair. Alec. “I know you’re here, mundane. I heard you being pathetic." I clutch my stele tighter. “Come out. I don’t want to hurt you. Just to talk to you.” He finishes. I can hear the malice in his voice, though he's trying to hide it. I pocket my stele and rise from the tree.

“What do you want, Alec?” I ask, wondering why he was here. “Let me see your dominate wrist.” Panic seizes my throat. I know what Alec wants. “Why?” I ask, hoping I can stall for time. Enough time to get a head start, to escape. “I know Jace. He doesn’t save random mundanes. Now let me see your wrist.” Before I can reply or escape, he reaches out fast as lighting and grabs my wrist and turns it up. I try to pull away but once again, I’m meeting with a vise grip. “I had my suspicions. But now I know I’m right. You’re one of us. I’m telling Hodge.”

“No please! Please don’t Alec!”

Why shouldn’t I? Give me one reason not to.” I think for a moment when the reason came up. “Jace.” I say. “Hodge will want to investigate. He’ll want to question me. Then Jace. Jace knows. Hodge will get angry and well… do it for Jace.” I finish. His other hand closes on my throat. “Don’t being Jace into this. Don’t use him as a shield.” Alec growls. His eyes are narrowed dangerously.

I claw at his hand and gasp for breath. Too bad I cut my nails before I left Friday. I take a lucky guess. “The Clave punishes those who conceal Shadowhunters. You wouldn’t want the Clave to punish Jace? Remove him from it? No, I don’t think so.” I manage to choke out. Alec drops me and staggers back, like I pushed him down. I fall on my knees, heaving gulps of fresh air that Alec denied my lungs. “How did you know about the Clave? How do you know about that Law? Did Jace tell you?” I see the fear in his eyes. He's so afraid.

“No. I didn’t know the Clave was real. I didn’t know that Law was real. Jace never told me. I guessed. But since that’s a real Law, you won’t tell Hodge?” I plead with my eyes. I see that he's weighing the options. I see his resolve crumbling. “No, I won’t But do not tell Jace this happened.” I nod, showing I understand. “Scram, mundie.” Alec hisses. I run back to Observatory park, back the way I had come. I fall onto the grass and breathe the fresh air.

Jace slams the door behind him. A girl with inky black hair, long legs, tan arms, and has dark eyes walks out. She is wearing a black racer back tank top, black skinny jeans, and four inch platform heels. "Jace! Where have you been?! I've been looking everywhere for you! You've been missing since last night!" The girl shouts. Her face is red, and is standing with her hands on her hips. "Nice to see you too, Izzy. In answer to your question, I was at the graveyard picked up a mundane, saved her life from a vampire, a concussion, and multiple wounds. I went for a walk, came back, and am now expecting a lecture from you." Jace finishes, crossing his arms, waiting for the riot act to be read. "WAIT! BACK UP! You rescued a mundane! Was that the girl I bandaged?"

"You'd be correct."

"Where is she?" Isabelle asks.

"Home." Jace said simply.

"Then where's Alec?" Isabelle asks, suddenly worried. After all, Alec was Isabelle's sister. Her hands drop to her side. "He walked her home. He should be back." As if on cue, the elevator doors squeak open. Her hands are abck onto her hips, the angry glare now on her bother. "The mundie's home.” Alec stated. "And I suppose you weren't going to tell me anytime soon, were you?" Isabelle demands.

"I was, right after I came home. I guess you knew before you came home." He said. Isabelle threw up her arms, huffs and storms off. "You ok?" Jace asks. To him, Alec seems uptight and worried about something. He looks at Jace, as though remembering something from earlier "Fine!" Alec snaps and storms off in the opposite direction as Isabelle.
